Reader Vows to Boycott GTA 6 Over Digital-Only Release, Accuses Rockstar of Greed
Reader Boycotts GTA 6 Over Digital-Only, Cites Rockstar Greed

A reader has declared they will not purchase Grand Theft Auto 6 because of its digital-only release, accusing Rockstar Games of manipulating fans to maximize profits. The reader, Taylor Moon Arrow, expressed frustration in a feature for GameCentral, stating that while the game's success is guaranteed, they object to the company's business practices.

Reader's Stance on Digital-Only Release

Arrow writes, "I'm not getting it. I know there's already lots of people talking about boycotts and petitions and everything, but we all know very few people are going to be able to resist the temptation of getting the game, and I don't criticise them at all." They acknowledge that they might cave in but remain committed to not buying the game unless a disc version is released, possibly in December. Arrow adds, "If this rumour about a proper disc version in December turns out to be true then fine, I'll get it then. But it's not going to change my newfound distrust of Rockstar and how they want to fleece us for money but won't just be upfront about it."

Criticism of Pricing and Microtransactions

Arrow notes that before the announcement, many expected GTA 6 to cost £100, but Rockstar opted for a lower price to encourage online engagement and microtransaction spending. "They want to get people online and spending money on microtransactions and people aren't going to flock quite as much to it if the price is so high," Arrow argues. The reader also criticizes the Ultimate Edition for including exclusive story content behind a paywall, saying, "They could've just done cosmetics and cars and weapons, which would have been fair enough (up to a point) but they went further and put story content behind a paywall."

Accusations of Manipulation

Arrow accuses Rockstar of anti-consumer behavior, stating, "The whole reason they don't want to put out a disc version is that they make more money from digital. Why share a cut of sales with shops when you can take it all for yourself?" They compare this to broader corporate manipulation, noting, "As consumers we're manipulated like this all the time by every kind of company. They want the maximum amount of money from us as they can get but they know they've got to be clever about it and make us think we're getting a bargain."

Impact of GTA Online on Release Timing

Arrow suggests that the long gap between GTA 5 and 6 is due to the profitability of GTA Online. "The only reason GTA 6 didn't come out before now is that they make so much money from GTA Online they didn't need to bother," they write. They contrast this with the five-year gap between GTA 4 and 5, attributing it to the lack of an online live service mode in GTA 4.

Reader's Final Decision

Arrow concludes that if they do buy the game, they will not spend on microtransactions. "Well, if I do end up buying the game I can guarantee I won't be buying any of those," they state. They add, "I don't want to be a pawn in some accountant's spreadsheet, I just want to buy and own a game, and play it on my own terms." The feature ends with a note that pre-orders for GTA 6 show PS5 outselling Xbox by a large margin, and that the game will feature social media in a significant way.
