Luis Suarez has offered Julian Alvarez valuable advice about his transfer decision, drawing parallels with his own career. The Uruguayan legend, now at Inter Miami, recalled how he chose to snub Arsenal and stay at Liverpool in 2013, a decision he now calls the best of his career.
Suarez's Own Transfer Saga
In the summer of 2013, Arsenal infamously bid £40 million plus £1 for Suarez. Liverpool owner John Henry responded by insisting the striker was not for sale, and Suarez remained at Anfield for another season. That year, he enjoyed arguably the best season of his career before moving to Barcelona. Suarez admitted he was initially pushing to join Arsene Wenger's side but was convinced to stay by then-captain Steven Gerrard.
Speaking on the Spanish radio program El Larguero, Suarez said: "I faced the same situation myself when I was at Liverpool, and I said I wanted to go to Arsenal, I wanted to play in the Champions League. The captain, Gerrard, came to me and convinced me, 'If you have a great season, we’ll help you and you’ll be able to go to Barcelona, Real Madrid, wherever you want.' He convinced me, and I went out to apologise because my comments hadn’t been appropriate at the time. I gave my all for Liverpool, the fans forgave me, and it turned out to be my best season at Liverpool."
Advice for Julian Alvarez
Suarez's comments come amid reports that Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, 26, has told the Spanish club he wants to leave. Alvarez, like Suarez in 2013, is one of the most sought-after forwards globally, with interest from Barcelona, Arsenal, and Real Madrid. Suarez believes Alvarez could benefit from staying at Atletico for another season, similar to his own experience.
Suarez said: "Diego Simeone and the fans might convince him that this could be Atletico’s year. Or perhaps Julian will stand his ground and say, 'That’s it.' That depends on each person." He added: "Barcelona and any team in the world will want him and will be willing to pay whatever it takes because he’s a great target man, he moves well between the centre-backs, he helps out a lot defensively, and he’ll have wingers who’ll provide him with plenty of assists. He’s a fast, powerful player."
Impact on Liverpool Transfer Links
Alvarez has been linked with a move to Liverpool, but Suarez's advice suggests that staying put could be beneficial. The 39-year-old Inter Miami star emphasized that a great season at Atletico could open doors to his dream move to Barcelona later. Suarez's own trajectory—staying at Liverpool, achieving personal success, and then moving to Barcelona—serves as a template for Alvarez.
