Australians will soon face an increased departure tax when leaving the country, as the Federal Budget announces a rise in the passenger movement charge. The fee, applicable to all passengers departing by air or sea, will increase from $70 to $80 starting January 1, 2027. This applies to both citizens and non-citizens, regardless of their intention to return.
Budget Impact and Industry Reaction
The Albanese Government projects that this measure will generate $755 million in savings over the next five years. However, aviation industry experts warn that airlines are likely to pass on the additional $10 to passengers through higher airfares.
Margy Osmond, chief executive of the Tourism and Transport Forum, described the changes as 'literally outrageous.' The fee hike has drawn criticism from industry stakeholders who argue it will burden travelers and potentially deter tourism.
