Tottenham Hotspur might inadvertently assist Arsenal with one of their key summer transfer targets, as the Gunners eye a move for Mateus Fernandes. The midfielder, who joined West Ham United last summer for approximately £40 million, could be forced to leave if the Hammers are relegated from the Premier League.
Fernandes Shines Despite Relegation Battle
The Portugal international moved to Southampton from Sporting two years ago, establishing himself as a Premier League regular before the Saints were relegated. He then joined West Ham, but the club is once again fighting to avoid the drop. Despite the team's struggles, Fernandes has continued to impress, attracting interest from Arsenal, who are seeking midfield reinforcements.
Financial Constraints in the Championship
According to reports, West Ham would be compelled to sell Fernandes if they are relegated due to the Championship's financial regulations. The division's new Squad Cost Rules (SCR) limit spending to 85% of revenue, with owners allowed to inject only an additional £15 million per season. Relegation would significantly reduce West Ham's income, making Fernandes' sale necessary.
West Ham currently sit two points from safety with two games remaining. They face Newcastle United before hosting Leeds United on the final day. However, if they fail to win this weekend, Tottenham could secure their own survival by beating Chelsea, which would relegate West Ham.
Arsenal's Interest and Contract Details
Arsenal have long tracked Fernandes, and his potential availability this summer presents an opportunity. He signed a five-year deal with West Ham last summer, with no standard release clause. However, reports suggest a relegation clause may exist, which would simplify negotiations. The CIES Football Observatory values Fernandes at up to £63 million, making a move financially significant.
Avoiding protracted talks with West Ham would be preferable for Arsenal, especially after their lengthy negotiations for Declan Rice exceeded £100 million. With Tottenham potentially doing them a favour by staying up, the Gunners could secure a key target at a reduced price.
