Kalvin Phillips aims to revive Man City career after injury setbacks

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is determined to put his injury woes behind him and revive his stalled career after another disappointing season. The 30-year-old former England international managed just three appearances on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship last term, with an injury cutting short his stint.

Loan struggles continue for Phillips

Phillips, who joined City from Leeds United for £45 million in 2022, has failed to establish himself at the Etihad. Subsequent loan spells at West Ham, Ipswich Town, and Sheffield United have not provided the platform he needs, with a lack of regular playing time leading to recurring injuries.

“It was alright, all two [three] games of it,” Phillips told the Yorkshire Evening Post. “I suffered an injury which kept me out for the rest of the season. That's been the problem for me the last three years of not playing regularly, it's made me acquire more injuries and stuff like that. So I'm looking forward to hopefully having a good season, actually.”

City seek permanent exit for midfielder

Phillips remains under contract at City until 2028, but he has not been part of the club’s plans for some time. The club will again look to move him on this summer, with a permanent transfer preferred. So far, only loan deals have been possible.

The midfielder is hoping to transform his fortunes and return to regular football, ending a run of disappointments. His most recent loan at Sheffield United yielded just three appearances before injury struck.

City midfield overhaul on the cards

Beyond Phillips, City sporting director Hugo Viana faces pressure to reshape the midfield this summer. Several signings in the last five years—including Matheus Nunes, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders—have failed to secure regular starting spots. Elliot Anderson is set to join for a club-record £116 million, and further additions may be needed. City are also monitoring Sandro Tonali and Morocco teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi as Viana surveys his options.
