British Man Lands Job in Austria After 1,000 UK Rejections
UK Job Seeker Finds Work in Austria After 1,000 Rejections

From London Rejection to Austrian Opportunity: A Job Seeker's Dramatic Turnaround

After facing what he describes as "constant rejection" in the United Kingdom, a British man has secured stable employment by making an unconventional move. Tamer Zeki, aged 29, submitted approximately 1,000 job applications across the UK without receiving a single offer. His fortunes changed dramatically after a mere two-hour flight to Austria, where he found work "easily" in a remote village.

A Stark Contrast in Job Market Competitiveness

Tamer Zeki had been striving to break into the data analytics field in London. Despite completing a three-month study course in the subject, his efforts yielded only four interviews from the multitude of applications. "I was trying to get into the data analytics field; I was applying for job after job. I must have applied for 1,000 jobs in London and only had four interviews," he explained.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Anna Haselboeck, was seeking opportunities in her native Austria. In a striking contrast, Anna secured three interviews and a job offer within just three weeks. "I find it so crazy how competitive the UK job market is," Anna remarked. "It was so easy for me to find a job in Austria and there would be only two to three applicants for each job. When Tam was applying for jobs in the UK, there would be 5,000 applicants."

The Unlikely Path to Employment

The couple's breakthrough came during a routine dental appointment. Anna discussed their situation with her family dentist, who revealed that his expanding health centre had positions available for both of them. This serendipitous conversation provided the perfect solution for the long-distance couple, who had been travelling together while maintaining separate bases.

Post-Brexit visa complications made relocation to the UK challenging for Anna, whereas Tamer found it significantly easier to obtain an Austrian visa, particularly with a job already arranged. He relocated to Lower Austria in April 2025, settling in Anna's hometown—a tiny village of just 400 residents nestled within a forest.

Life in a Remote Austrian Village

The village, which boasts only one road and a solitary restaurant run by Anna's parents, offers a radically different lifestyle from London. While the isolation can be profound—"It can get very lonely and isolating. Even when you go outside for a walk, you don't see anyone," Tamer admitted—the financial and lifestyle benefits are substantial.

  • Housing Costs: The couple secured a three-bedroom flat for approximately £800 monthly, compared to the £1,300 one-bedroom properties Tamer had been considering in London.
  • Living Expenses: Weekly grocery bills have been halved, from £100 in the capital to just £50 in Austria.
  • Employment: Tamer now works as a digital orthodontic technician, while Anna serves as an office manager at the same health centre.

Challenges and Contentment

Adjusting to life in Austria has not been without its difficulties. Tamer faces a significant language barrier, often resorting to sign language with colleagues despite several months of lessons. He also misses his family and his cat, particularly as his sister has recently had children.

Nevertheless, the couple are content with their new life. Tamer enjoys his work, the natural surroundings, and the silence of the village. "It's been a really good experience for me, I love my work, I love the nature and the silence. I love being able to live with Anna," he said. They document their journey on social media under the handle @tamandanna, and Tamer plans to extend his visa upon its expiration.
