As winter temperatures drop, many Britons are looking for ways to reduce heating costs. Consumer experts at Which? have shared four simple radiator hacks that could save hundreds of pounds annually. These adjustments aim to improve heating efficiency and lower energy bills.
One tip, popularised by Martin Lewis, involves placing aluminium foil behind radiators, especially on external walls. This reflects heat back into the room rather than letting it escape. To install, measure the gap between radiator brackets, cut the foil to size, and secure it with double-sided tape.
Another key step is cleaning radiators regularly. Dust acts as an insulator, blocking airflow and forcing the system to work harder, which increases energy consumption and can worsen air quality. Cleaning internal fins helps maintain efficiency.
Bleeding radiators to remove trapped air is also recommended. Air pockets prevent hot water from circulating properly, reducing warmth. To bleed, turn off the heating, use a radiator key to open the valve until water drips, then close it. Finally, ensure furniture is at least one foot away from radiators to allow heat to circulate freely, avoiding blockages that waste energy.
