Ted Lasso Actor Signs Pro Soccer Contract with El Paso

Cristo Fernandez, the actor celebrated for his role as Dani Rojas in the Apple TV series Ted Lasso, has officially signed a professional soccer contract with El Paso Locomotive FC of the United Soccer League (USL). The agreement, announced on Tuesday, is pending approval from the second-tier league and the relevant football federation, with financial terms remaining undisclosed.

From Acting to the Pitch

Fernandez, 35, earned the contract after a two-month trial with the club, during which he participated in a pre-season friendly against New Mexico United. His soccer journey began at youth level, but a career-ending injury at age 15 steered him toward acting. However, the dream of playing professionally never faded.

"No matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernandez said in a statement. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC — the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates — for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."

Coach and Team Reactions

Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez praised Fernandez as a valuable addition to the squad, highlighting his attacking prowess and the passion and leadership he brings to the dressing room. Fernandez has appeared in all three seasons of Ted Lasso since its debut in 2020, with a fourth season set to premiere later this year. In the upcoming season, Jason Sudeikis's character, Ted Lasso, returns to London to coach a women's team at AFC Richmond.

Other Ventures

Beyond Ted Lasso, Fernandez starred in a 2024 State Farm commercial titled "Bundle is Life" alongside Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion. He also had a minor role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, featuring Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves. Now, in his mid-thirties, Fernandez is ready to chase his soccer ambitions after securing his first professional contract.
