Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Strawberries: Worth the Extra Cost?
Are Sainsbury's Premium Strawberries Worth the Extra Cost?

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference strawberries are currently on a 3-for-2 promotion for Nectar Card holders, prompting a comparison with the standard range. The premium punnet costs £2.75, while the standard version is priced at £2.25 on a Nectar Price. Both punnets share the same best before date and originate from separate UK farms.

Key Differences Between Premium and Standard Berries

The Taste the Difference strawberries are classified as extra class, indicating flawless, premium produce, whereas the standard berries are class 1, denoting good, standard supermarket quality. The premium packaging states the berries are "hand selected, perfectly ripe, sweet and juicy."

Upon visual inspection, the main difference is a few stray leaves in the cheaper punnet. However, tasting reveals a clear distinction: the Taste the Difference berries are perfectly ripe with greater firmness, offering a satisfying crunch, while the standard berries are softer and almost dissolve in the mouth.

Recipe: Sainsbury's Swavory Summer Salad

Sainsbury's has also unveiled a "swavory" salad recipe featuring summer berries. Ingredients include Taste the Difference berries, crumbled Greek Feta, mixed salad leaves, and walnut halves. The vinaigrette combines extra virgin olive oil, cider vinegar, Canadian maple syrup, Dijon mustard, finely chopped echalion shallots, and salt and cracked black pepper. Sainsbury's recommends storing the vinaigrette separately and keeping leaves in their bag until serving to maintain freshness.
