The distinctive landmark building at the junction of Clarence Place and Chepstow Road in Newport, which has hosted hundreds of thousands of visitors over decades as a cinema, nightclub, and events venue, now sits eerily empty and is heading to auction. The Grade II listed structure, originally built as the Odeon cinema in 1938, is being sold with a guide price of £150,000.
A Rare Art Deco Survivor in South Wales
Designed by Arthur Price under the executive oversight of architect Harry Weedon, the building is described as having a 1930s modernist style with Art Deco influences. Cadw awarded it Grade II listing in 1999, calling it a 'rare surviving example in Wales of cinema whose exterior preserves the distinctive architectural vocabulary of the 1930s Odeon style'. While the exterior retains much of its original character, many of the interior 1930s details have been lost through conversions and updates over the years.
From Cinema to Nightclub and Beyond
Over its lifetime, the property has served as the Odeon cinema, a nightclub known as The Neon, and a venue for live music, conferences, events, and even wrestling. The substantial open-plan spaces and flexible internal areas could be adapted for numerous future purposes, including multi-unit accommodation, subject to obtaining necessary consents. The building comprises a reception lobby, bar area, large arena, second bar, beer cellar, toilets, offices, stores, and balcony theatre-style seating.
Prime Location and Auction Details
Located along one of Newport's main arterial roads leading into the city centre, the property benefits from outstanding visibility and easy access to Newport railway station, the M4 motorway, and the city's shopping and business facilities. The red brick rear and side facades are a familiar sight to train passengers on the main south Wales to London Paddington route. The Neon is going to online auction with Seel & Co Auctions, with bidding opening on Monday, July 6 at noon and ending at 4.21pm on Tuesday, July 7. For more information, call 029 2037 0117.
