Whickham Village Crowned North East's Best Place to Live in UK Ranking
Whickham Named North East's Best Place to Live in UK

Whickham Village Secures Top North East Spot in UK's Best Places to Live List

Property experts Garrington have crowned the Gateshead village of Whickham as the North East's premier location to reside in their latest UK-wide rankings. While no North East destinations broke into the national top 40, Whickham claimed a respectable 41st place overall, dethroning last year's regional champion Alnwick in the process.

A Significant Climb in the Rankings

Whickham's achievement represents a notable ascent of nine positions above Alnwick, which previously held the North East crown. Newcastle trailed closely behind the historic Northumberland town in 51st place, with Barnard Castle in County Durham following at 53rd. Garrington's assessment highlights Whickham's welcoming residents, stunning landscapes, and excellent dining and drinking establishments as key factors in its elevated status.

Community Voices Celebrate Whickham's Charm

Local grocer Frazer Anderson of Elliott's Fruit and Veg observed, "People in general are happy here, even on rainy days there's still people out – only one shop is closed down when many high streets can't say the same." He acknowledged some challenges, noting a decline since council funding for Britain in Bloom ceased, but praised volunteers who now organize Christmas lights, litter picking, and other community initiatives.

Anderson also commented on recent council changes, including free 20-minute parking, which he described as "a massive help" though he suggested extending it to an hour would better accommodate errands like dental visits or post office trips.

Generational Connections and Family Roots

Long-term resident Phillip Couley, who has called Whickham home for 35 years, expressed his affection for the area, describing it as brilliant for families and children. He shared a touching family legacy: "That tree on the green was planted by my wife's great-great-grandmother after World War One. The kids all call it the family tree!"

Couley highlighted the strong community spirit, mentioning regular gatherings at Milligans where residents aged from their 30s to 90s meet, humorously dubbed the "youth club."

Evolution and Growth Over Decades

Lifelong resident Ann Lumley has witnessed Whickham's transformation from a small village to a much larger community, noting that even footballers have moved in. She pointed out local historical landmarks like monuments to Harry Clasper and Lang Jack, while reflecting that "it was better in the 60s – shop wise" with current turnover, but acknowledged the area's enduring appeal for pubs and nearby attractions like Gibside.

Thriving Local Businesses and New Developments

Emma Doyle, who acquired Irvine's Cafe and Bistro on Front Street in November 2024, reported thriving trade with a mix of regulars and young couples. "You get to know people and they tell you about their day," she said, emphasizing the personal connections formed.

Her colleague Millie Unwin, also a Whickham local, declared she cannot imagine relocating, describing the village as "full of life and lovely people" with everything needed thanks to new additions like Savers, alongside good shops, restaurants, and pubs.

Enduring Local Enterprise and Support

Rodger Martin from R.Martin and Son Butchers, a third and fourth generation business operating for 32 years, called Whickham a "fantastic" location. "Even in dire weather people still come out and support local," he remarked, noting the busy shopping precinct that remains a regional draw.

This collective testimony from residents and business owners underscores why Whickham has earned its place as the North East's standout community in Garrington's prestigious rankings.
