Motorhome Owners Face Confusing Patchwork of Council Parking Rules

Motorhome and campervan owners are increasingly at risk of unexpected fines as local councils introduce a patchwork of parking restrictions in response to the staycation boom, according to insurance expert Mark Sheppard.

Sheppard, a motorhome and campervan insurance specialist at Safeguard, told GB News that the lack of uniformity across different parts of the country is one of the greatest hurdles facing owners. "Regulations and restrictions actually change. There's not one national rule for it," he said. "It tends to be different in different areas, which is the confusing part for motorhome and campervan owners."

Local Residents Frustrated by Larger Vehicles

Sheppard explained that councils have felt compelled to act in popular areas where local residents become frustrated by the impact of larger vehicles. "When you've got these larger vehicles in popular areas, local residents can become frustrated by the impact they have," he said. "I think councils have probably felt they've had to do something, particularly in areas that see a large influx of visitors during the summer season."

However, he warned that imposing higher charges and more restrictions could backfire. "If you start imposing higher charges and more restrictions on vehicle owners just because of the type of vehicle they have, it's probably going to dissuade people from going there," he said. "You might see that there are more cons than pros."

Advice for Motorhome and Campervan Drivers

Sheppard emphasised the importance of understanding local restrictions and signage before travelling. "The key thing for owners is making sure they understand local restrictions and signage before they travel," he said. "There needs to be more readily available information on hotspots and areas people are travelling to. There are often dedicated areas for motorhomes and campervans, so it's about making sure people are aware of where they can and can't stay."

He noted that the demographic of motorhome owners has shifted. "Historically, motorhomes were seen as something for retirees, but that's now changed. With mobile working and the fact people don't have to go into an office five days a week, they're travelling around the UK and Europe while still working."

Sheppard called for longer-term solutions from local authorities. "Motorhome owners need to be conscious they are driving larger vehicles, but at the same time, local authorities need to think about longer-term solutions rather than simply reacting when visitor numbers increase. As more people choose this lifestyle, it's something that will need to be looked at more closely in the years ahead."

Permanent Overnight Parking Ban in North Yorkshire

These concerns follow the introduction of a permanent overnight parking ban on campervans and motorhomes at popular tourist destinations along the North Yorkshire coast, after councillors voted to approve the order, as reported by Birmingham Live.

Richard Lancaster, 58, believes van owners are being unfairly blamed for the behaviour of all visitors. "Tourists are coming in their cars, they're racking barbecues up, they're tenting in the castle grounds, they're leaving litter all over," Richard said. He added that the area was "stunning", but said "people are just abusing it and we're getting blamed for it on an everyday basis."
