UK Households Warned: Stop Pouring Olive Oil Down Drains to Avoid Costly Blockages
Stop Pouring Olive Oil Down Drains to Avoid Blockages

Households across the UK have been warned to stop pouring excess cooking oil, including olive oil and vegetable oil, down the sink drain to avoid expensive plumbing issues. The advice comes from drainage experts who highlight that this common habit can lead to serious blockages and costly repairs.

Why Pouring Oil Down the Drain Is Harmful

Fats, oils, and grease—collectively known as FOG by utility companies—are a major cause of drain damage. According to Drain Doctor, a drainage and plumbing service, FOG sticks to the inside of pipes and solidifies when cooled, eventually causing blockages and contributing to the formation of fatbergs. These massive congealed masses can clog entire sewer systems and require expensive professional removal.

"FOG is a drainage technician’s worst nightmare," warns Drain Doctor in a hints and tips article on their website. "Not only does FOG stick to the inside of pipes, but will also solidify when chilled, eventually causing blockages and contributing to fatbergs."

How to Dispose of Cooking Oil Safely

Experts advise allowing cooking oil to cool to room temperature before disposal to avoid burns and make handling easier. Once cooled, the oil should be poured into a sealable container and placed in the general waste bin—not in the compost, as it can harm soil quality. Any residue left in the pan can be wiped off with a paper towel and thrown away.

For larger quantities, households may be able to recycle cooking oil at local waste facilities, many of which now convert it into biofuel. Residents are encouraged to check their local council's recycling guidelines for proper disposal options.

Common Items That Should Not Go Down Drains

In addition to cooking oils, Drain Doctor identifies nine other items that should never be poured down sinks, including coffee grounds, paint, and medication. The company stresses that even small amounts of FOG can accumulate over time, leading to significant plumbing problems and environmental harm.

By following these simple disposal tips, UK households can help prevent costly drain blockages and protect their local sewer systems from the growing problem of fatbergs.
