Lidl's 40p baked beans have been declared a worthy substitute for Heinz in a blind taste test, with the budget option offering a 'pleasant, well-rounded flavour' that could save shoppers over £1 per tin.
Taste Test Results
A journalist from the Express compared two budget supermarket baked beans—Aldi and Lidl, both 40p for 410g—against Heinz, which costs roughly £1.40 for a 415g tin. Lidl's beans impressed with their rich colour and consistency, delivering a fuller taste that complemented toast, chips, or standalone servings.
Aldi's beans, however, were described as 'rather watery' with a runny sauce that left minimal coating on the beans. While not dreadful for the price, they failed to match Heinz or Lidl's option without additions like salt, spices, or cheese.
Cost Savings
According to the article, customers switching from Heinz to Lidl could save upwards of £1 per tin, which adds up quickly for regular consumers. Lidl and Aldi consistently rank as the most affordable supermarkets for weekly shops in the UK.
The journalist noted that if choices were restricted, Lidl beans are a 'reasonable substitute' for Heinz, and the savings could persuade shoppers to try less familiar brands.
