Aldi Digestives Beat McVitie's in Taste Test: 10/10

Aldi's own-brand digestive biscuits have emerged as the winner in a taste test, scoring a perfect 10 out of 10 and beating the market leader McVitie's, which scored 9 out of 10. The discount retailer's biscuits cost just 59p per packet, significantly cheaper than McVitie's, which retails at £1.88 from Asda.

How the Test Was Conducted

Senior Audience Writer Mia O'Hare sampled digestive biscuits from Lidl, Aldi, Asda, Marks & Spencer, and the branded McVitie's to determine which supermarket own-brand could rival the leading brand. The biscuits were judged on flavour, consistency, and overall appeal.

Lidl Comes Last

Lidl's digestive biscuits scored the lowest at 2 out of 10. According to O'Hare, they had an odd flavour reminiscent of a Rich Tea biscuit rather than a traditional digestive. She noted that they lacked any distinctive taste and after one mouthful, she had sampled enough.

M&S Biscuits Too Firm

Marks & Spencer's digestives scored 5 out of 10. O'Hare found them too firm to snap apart with her hands and difficult to bite into. She said the consistency made the biscuits considerably chewier than required, discouraging her from having any more.

Asda's Crumbly Offering

Asda's digestives scored 6 out of 10. Upon opening the packet, crumbs scattered everywhere, and the first biscuit disintegrated in her hands. However, the flavour was quite comparable to the branded alternative, though sweeter than others.

McVitie's Remains a Strong Contender

The household name McVitie's scored 9 out of 10. O'Hare said it remains a cherished personal favourite and continues to outperform numerous supermarket alternatives. She noted there is something unmistakable about McVitie's Digestives that makes them an ideal accompaniment to a cup of tea.

Aldi Takes the Crown

Aldi's digestive biscuits scored a perfect 10 out of 10. O'Hare praised their great consistency and well-balanced savoury-sweet flavour. The biscuits did not disintegrate into pieces nor were they excessively hard. At just 59p, the cost makes them even more attractive.
