Dad Fulfills Dream by Reviving One of Wirral's Oldest Takeaway Shops
Dad Revives Wirral's Oldest Takeaway Shop

Chef Joe Roscelli, a 35-year-old father of two from Prenton, has taken over Off The Square on Market Street in Birkenhead, one of the area's oldest takeaways. The shop, named after its proximity to Hamilton Square, had operated for nearly two decades before closing in May 2024. Previous owner Mariam Abrishami said she left with a "heart full of appreciation and wonderful memories."

A New Concept Under a Familiar Name

After a thorough refurbishment, Roscelli reopened the takeaway four weeks ago with a completely revamped menu. He told the ECHO: "It was cool to take over such a legacy at first. We spent a lot of time refurbishing the place and making it our own, moving things around." The new concept is American-inspired, featuring loaded chips, mac and cheese boxes, hot baguettes, and indulgent comfort food.

Menu Highlights

Customers choose a base of mac and cheese, chunky chips, or a Swiss baguette, then add toppings such as Hamilton Pitmaster, Birkenhead Birria, Square Bhuna, Hot Homey Halloumi, or Chilli Sin Carne. The popular Munch Boxes include salt-and-pepper chips, a whole beef baguette, mac and cheese, slaw, and pots of beef consommé and cheese sauce for dipping. Many dishes are available with a gluten-free option.

A Chef's Journey to Independence

Roscelli, who previously worked at Crowne Plaza, Mowgli, and Pina Loca, said owning his own business has given him more family time. He runs Off The Square with his friend Francesco. "Being a chef means long hours, and I didn't get to spend much time with my family. Now I can pick the kids up after school and spend time with them in the afternoon," he said. "After all these years, it's great to finally have my own business. There have been a few learning curves, but after the first month we've really found our rhythm."

Opening Hours and Availability

Off The Square is open Monday to Friday from 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 7.30pm, with collection and delivery available via Just Eat. Roscelli is confident that as word spreads about the new concept, business will pick up. "People love the food. We've already had multiple customers coming back," he added.
