Free Water Initiative in Select Stores
Morrisons has announced it is providing free bottles of water to customers in select stores across the UK as temperatures soar during the ongoing heatwave. The supermarket chain aims to help shoppers stay hydrated amid scorching conditions that are expected to break records standing for 50 years.
A spokesperson for Morrisons confirmed the initiative is "arranged on a local level by the store’s Community Champion to look after the customers in the warm weather," according to The Sun. The free water is available in participating stores, and grateful customers have shared images on Facebook showing their local Morrisons taking part.
Record Temperatures and Red Warning
The Met Office issued a rare red heat warning earlier this week for parts of the UK, as temperatures are forecast to reach 40°C (104°F). The extreme heat has prompted government advice urging Brits to take precautions to avoid overheating, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
One customer took to Facebook to praise the gesture, writing: "With temperatures soaring, they were giving out free bottles of water to customers as they entered the store. It’s a small gesture, but on a hot day it can make a big difference. Acts of kindness do not have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes a simple bottle of water is enough to put a smile on someone’s face. Well done Morrisons."
Government Heat Safety Advice
The government has issued advice for staying safe in the hot weather. It recommends physical activity be done at cooler times of the day, such as early morning or evening. People are advised to keep their homes cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun.
Brits are urged to drink plenty of fluids and limit alcohol intake to stay hydrated. Additionally, people should check on family, friends, and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and ask those at higher risk to do the same.
Morrisons has over 1,000 stores across the UK, and the free water initiative is one of several measures the chain has implemented to assist customers during the extreme weather.
