Smiggle Launches 70% Closing Down Sale as Redditch Store Shuts
Smiggle Launches 70% Closing Down Sale in Redditch

Major UK high street chain Smiggle has launched a dramatic closing down sale, with shoppers able to secure discounts of up to 70% on selected items as one of its stores prepares to shut its doors permanently. The popular retailer, known for its vibrant stationery and accessories, is slashing prices at its Redditch outlet in Worcestershire ahead of its final day of trading on February 22.

A Blow to Local Shoppers

The store, located within the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, first opened in 2017 and has been a familiar destination for families with young children and fans of quirky stationery. Its closure represents another significant setback for local shoppers, who are already contending with numerous empty units and a diminishing range of choices on the high street. The shutdown has sparked a wave of frustration and sadness among the community, with many expressing concerns about the future viability of their local shopping centre.

Online Reactions Highlight Wider Concerns

News of the Redditch closure has generated a strong reaction on social media platforms. One Facebook user lamented, "Another shop closing redditch kingfisher will not be worth shopping in as most of the shops are empty it's like a ghost town nothing worth going up for!" Another added, "Really is sad to see yet another shop closing down in the kingfisher, wish all the staff the best of luck." A third commented, "I was just in Redditch and didn’t even think to look in there. Can’t believe it’s closing down."

Smiggle's Shrinking Physical Presence

Founded in Melbourne in 2003, Smiggle expanded into the British market in 2014, rapidly building a loyal following among children and parents with its colourful backpacks, novelty pens, and eye-catching accessories. At its peak, the brand operated more than 130 stores across the nation. However, this footprint has contracted significantly in recent years. According to the company’s official website, Smiggle now runs just 94 UK stores.

The Redditch closure is part of a broader trend of physical store shutdowns for the retailer. Recent closures include branches in Shrewsbury and Inverness in May 2025, Cwmbran Shopping Centre in August 2025, Salisbury in January 2026, and Dundee in 2023. More recently, the retailer vacated its premises on Coney Street in York. Smiggle joins other major high street names, such as Poundland and River Island, in scaling back their bricks-and-mortar presence as consumer behaviour shifts increasingly online and operating costs continue to escalate.

Wider Retail Sector Under Pressure

The challenges facing Smiggle reflect broader difficulties within the UK retail sector. The Centre for Retail Research has forecast more than 17,000 store closures across the country in 2025 alone. Industry experts warn that a combination of rising rents, higher business rates, increased energy bills, growing National Insurance contributions, and a higher National Minimum Wage is placing intense pressure on retailers of all sizes. For many towns, each new closure deepens anxieties about the long-term sustainability of local shopping centres and high streets.

Smiggle's Ongoing Operations

Despite these closures, Smiggle continues to maintain a presence in several key towns and cities across the UK. The brand operates five stores in London, five in Greater Manchester, and five in and around Birmingham. Additionally, it has outlets in Bristol, Liverpool, Oxford, Derby, Stratford-upon-Avon, Sheffield, Leicester, and Nottingham, according to its website. This indicates a strategic shift towards consolidating operations in larger urban areas while retreating from some smaller locations.

Smiggle stores closed or closing:

  • Redditch (closing February 22)
  • Salisbury (closed January 2026)
  • Shrewsbury (closed May 2025)
  • Inverness (closed May 2025)
  • Cwmbran Shopping Centre (closed August 2025)
  • Dundee (closed 2023)

The closure of the Redditch store, with its substantial 70% discount sale, underscores the ongoing transformation of the UK retail landscape, as traditional high street chains adapt to evolving consumer preferences and economic pressures.
