Troon, a seaside town about 45 minutes from Glasgow, proved to be the perfect destination for a warm summer evening, offering what one visitor called the best meal of her life for under £15. The award-winning chippy, The Wee Hurrie, located on the harbour, served fresh scampi with a light batter for £14.30.
Evening Stroll and Harbour Dining
After a thunderstorm earlier in the day, the sun emerged as the visitor walked along the shore. The beach was quiet, with only a few people about. The stroll was short-lived as the main goal was to grab dinner at The Wee Hurrie, which had been closed during a previous visit in January due to the tied-up fishing fleet.
The Wee Hurrie: Award-Winning Fresh Seafood
The Wee Hurrie is known for its fresh seafood and unique location. The menu includes fritto misto, noodles, and lobster. The scampi, coated in a light batter, was served with tartare sauce, a lemon wedge, salt, and vinegar. It was filling and satisfying, with generous portion sizes. The meal cost £14.30, and the visitor described it as worth every penny.
According to the visitor, Nicola Roy, "The scampi was so unbelievably fresh, coated in a light batter that didn't make me feel bloated or gross afterwards, which is a real rarity for a chippy."
Takeaway Experience and High Street Walk
The Wee Hurrie is a takeaway with no seating, so customers queue up to order and take food home or eat standing outside. After dinner, a walk down Troon's high street revealed independent shops and cafes, many closed by 7pm, but pubs were busy. The visitor noted Lido on the high street as a potential spot for a drink.
Troon: A Fantastic Place to Explore
The visit was shorter than a previous one in January but much more enjoyable due to the delicious food and evening sun. Troon is recommended for those nearby or from further afield, offering a fantastic exploration opportunity.
