The Coal Regeneration Trust (CRT) has confirmed a £13.5 million investment in former coalfield communities, with a portion allocated to Ashington's Ashwood Business Park in Northumberland. The deputy leader of Northumberland County Council, Richard Wearmouth, welcomed the plans, stating that the investment will provide 'much-needed' starter units for new businesses.
Investment Details and Purpose
The CRT's funding aims to build industrial developments for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), creating jobs and economic growth in towns like Ashington that historically relied on the coal industry. Ashington was once the world's largest coal-mining village but has faced severe deprivation since the mines closed. According to the 2021 census, approximately 65% of households in Ashington are considered deprived, with the Ashington Hirst ward—the former centre of coal mining—being one of the most deprived wards in the county.
Support from Local Leaders
Richard Wearmouth, deputy leader of Northumberland County Council, said: 'I’m delighted that the CRT are looking to make this investment. Last year we contacted them and said there was a brilliant opportunity here in Northumberland for them to create starter units. We really appreciate them jumping at the chance to back Northumberland economy. There’s a real need for starter units here as companies look to get to supply major developments like the QTS and other schemes which are transforming our economic prospects. I can’t wait to see the next stages.'
Government Matching and Broader Context
The UK Government plans to match the CRT's funding through the Growth Mission Fund. Chancellor Rachel Reeves acknowledged that former coalfield communities have been 'overlooked for decades'. The CRT investment complements a masterplan by Advance Northumberland, the county council's development company, for a 525,000 sq ft extension of Ashwood Business Park. This expansion is expected to generate up to £86 million in inward investment.
Existing Developments at Ashwood Business Park
Established in 2003, Ashwood Business Park already hosts Europe's most advanced paint and coatings production plant, AkzoNobel, as well as the headquarters of Bernicia Homes (a major housing association) and Contec, a leading manufacturer of contamination control products.
