Arsenal's hopes of signing Bruno Guimaraes have suffered a setback after an intermediary offer of £45 million for the Newcastle United captain was rejected, according to Chronicle Live. The Premier League champions are eager to strengthen their midfield following their title win in May, but face significant hurdles in luring the Brazilian away from St James' Park.
Contract Extension Option Complicates Move
Reports from Shields Gazette indicate that Newcastle hold an option to extend Guimaraes' current contract by a further 12 months, which would keep him at the club until the summer of 2029 if activated. This clause strengthens Newcastle's negotiating position and could force Arsenal to pay a premium or look elsewhere.
Earlier speculation about a £60 million release clause in Guimaraes' contract was dismissed by sources on Tyneside, who insisted no such clause exists. The 28-year-old, who provided the winning assist for Brazil against Japan in the World Cup round of 32, remains a priority target for Mikel Arteta.
Alternative Target Ayyoub Bouaddi Comes With Strings Attached
If Arsenal fail to secure Guimaraes, attention may turn to Lille's 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The Moroccan teenager has impressed at the World Cup and is attracting interest from Manchester City, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal.
According to the Standard, Lille have set a £70 million price tag for Bouaddi, but only if the buying club agrees to loan him back for the 2026-27 season. If Arsenal insist on taking him immediately, the fee rises to around £85 million.
Arsenal's Summer Transfer Plans
Arsenal are expected to spend heavily after ending their 22-year Premier League title drought. Sporting director Andrea Berta reportedly has a transfer war chest of around £250 million. The club has already made Piero Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent for £34.5 million.
Strengthening midfield is a top priority for Arteta, who is also determined to improve after losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. The coming weeks will reveal whether Arsenal can overcome the obstacles in their pursuit of Guimaraes or pivot to Bouaddi under Lille's conditions.
