John Murdoch tests the Kia K4, a stylish five-door hatchback that replaces the Ceed, and previews the new high-performance CUPRA Formentor VZ5, limited to 4000 units globally.
Kia K4: A Stylish and Practical Family Hatchback
The Kia K4 is a smart five-door hatchback that recently replaced the Ceed in Kia's lineup, making it a crucial model for the Korean manufacturer. Good-looking and well equipped, it is available in a choice of powertrains, and the hatchback is about to be joined by an estate version. Designed to sit alongside the all-electric EV4, the K4 is priced from just over £26,000.
Engine and Trim Options
The K4 is available with two petrol engines and three trims. The entry-level model features a 1.0-litre mild hybrid unit delivering 113bhp, with a six-speed manual gearbox in Pure grade or a seven-speed automatic in GT-Line. For more power, the 1.6-litre engine offers 147bhp on GT-Line or 177bhp on the range-topping GT-Line S version, which has a dual-clutch automatic box.
Design and Interior
The K4 boasts a sloping roof, sleek lines, and coupe-like styling. Kia lighting adds appeal, and the top model includes larger 18-inch alloys, privacy glass, and extensive equipment. Inside, the cabin features soft surfaces, comfortable seats, and a single curved panel merging two 12.3-inch infotainment screens and a 5.3-inch climate control screen. The touchscreen responds quickly and includes a personal assistant powered by ChatGPT. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, sat nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, and a premium sound system are standard. Owners can also stream subscription infotainment packages.
Performance and Driving Experience
The test car with 177bhp achieved a top speed of 130mph and 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds. Power delivery is smooth, with combined fuel economy of 42.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 152g/km. On a long motorway run to Liverpool, Murdoch recorded nearly 47mpg. The K4 cruises comfortably at motorway speeds and handles demanding country roads with impressive road holding. Driving modes adjust dynamics, and steering wheel paddles add fun. The steering is sharp and well-weighted, and good visibility aids urban driving.
Space and Practicality
Built at a new plant in Mexico, the K4 offers ample interior space for four adults. The boot holds 438 litres, expanding to 1217 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded. Cabin storage includes wireless charging and four USB-C ports. Safety and driver assistance features are comprehensive.
Pricing and Verdict
The tested GT-Line S costs £36,865. Murdoch rates the K4 4.7 out of 5, praising its handsome styling, competitive pricing, equipment, and technology. The warranty covers seven years or 100,000 miles.
