A traveller has been cautioned by airport security staff against wearing a Juicy Couture tracksuit through airport scanners after the diamanté embellishments repeatedly triggered alarms. Danielle Kate Wroe, a senior social news reporter, shared her experience of being pulled aside at Manchester Airport and advised to avoid the outfit in future to prevent further stops.
The Incident at Security
Wroe, who had chosen her Juicy Couture tracksuit for comfort during travel, was initially relieved to hear that jackets could remain on and liquids kept in bags. However, a security officer noticed the diamanté 'Juicy' lettering on the back of her top and asked if her pants matched. After confirming, she was told she would likely be stopped. Upon passing through the scanner, an alarm was triggered, traced back to the tracksuit. She was then directed to have her shoes checked.
As she left, the officer advised her not to wear the tracksuit to the airport in future to avoid being stopped. Wroe admitted this was not the first time she had received such advice but stated the outfit was too comfortable and stylish to leave at home.
Previous Experiences and Common Occurrences
Wroe noted that she is often stopped at security due to jewellery, suspecting she would have triggered alarms regardless. She assumed the diamantés were plastic and metal-free, but that may not be the case. Despite the inconvenience, she expressed no frustration, praising the courteous and good-natured staff at Manchester Airport. She acknowledged that airport security can sometimes feel like a "humiliation ritual," as described by one user on X, but emphasised that her experience was handled professionally.
Other women have shared similar stories on X. One wrote: "My bedazzled Juicy Couture track pants set off the airport security scanner and I had to get a pat down and an explosives test." Another said: "I went through airport security in my Juicy Couture pants, and the bum got flagged," followed by a crying with laughter emoji.
Advice for Travellers
The incident highlights the potential for embellished clothing to cause delays at airport security. Travellers are advised to consider metal or metallic components in clothing items, as even small amounts can trigger scanners. Manchester Airport has been contacted for comment but has not yet responded.
