UK's Worst Broadband Congestion: These 5 Postcodes Suffer Most at Peak Times
UK's Worst Broadband Congestion: Top 5 Postcodes Hit Hard

Millions of UK broadband users are all too familiar with the frustration of sluggish internet speeds during peak evening hours. A new study by Broadband Genie has identified the areas most affected by this congestion, with Wigan (WN1) suffering the worst drop in performance.

How Peak-Time Congestion Affects Broadband

Online congestion typically strikes between 7pm and 11pm, when households log on to stream movies, download files, and make video calls. During working hours, fewer people are online, so speeds remain fast and reliable. But as evening arrives, local networks can become overloaded, causing significant slowdowns.

Think of broadband like a motorway: the more traffic using it at the same time, the slower everything moves. This explains why many households notice a sharp drop in performance after work.

Worst Areas for Evening Slowdowns

According to the report, Wigan (WN1) experiences the most severe drop, with average speeds falling from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to just 75Mbps in the evening — a decline of 55%. Other heavily affected areas include:

  • Galashiels (TD1): Off-peak 135Mbps to peak 77Mbps (43% drop)
  • Harrogate (HG1): Off-peak 133Mbps to peak 81Mbps (39% drop)
  • Exeter (EX1): Off-peak 55Mbps to peak 34Mbps (37% drop)
  • Rochester (ME1): Off-peak 195Mbps to peak 127Mbps (35% drop)

Interestingly, not all parts of the UK suffer from evening slowdowns. Some areas actually see an improvement. Newport came out best in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Regional Variations

The report also highlighted regional differences. Scotland ranked highest overall, with broadband performance generally improving in the evenings. Wales and the East of England also performed well. At the opposite end, the South West experienced the worst peak-time slowdowns, with average speeds falling by around 15% compared to daytime.

Broadband Genie analysed 144,509 speed tests to identify locations where performance changes most at peak times. A spokesperson said: "Have you ever noticed your broadband slowing down in the evening? Just like our roads, internet networks can experience congestion. Customers in Wigan experienced the largest drop, with average speeds falling by 55% during the busiest hours."

Tips to Improve Your Connection

Broadband experts suggest several ways households can boost their connection. Keep your router in an open, central position away from obstacles to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media also recommend regularly rebooting routers to clear temporary network issues.
