Weston-super-Mare, a Somerset seaside town once dubbed one of the 'worst' in the UK by Which? and The Telegraph, has been named the number one trending destination for 2026 by FlixBus, the UK's favourite low-cost coach service. The town, known for its Victorian pier and long sandy beach, fell into decline in the 1960s but is now undergoing a renaissance.
According to FlixBus, search interest in Weston-super-Mare has surged due to a renewed love for quintessential British beach breaks. The town is currently benefiting from over £20 million in restoration projects, including the rebuilding of Grade II* Birnbeck Pier, a major town centre re-development, and the rejuvenation of the Tropicana, the former lido that hosted Banksy's Dismaland exhibition in 2015. These projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Weston-super-Mare offers a traditional British beach experience with a two-mile-long sandy beach, a flat promenade, and family-friendly attractions like the Grand Pier with indoor rides and arcade machines. The Marine Lake provides free seafront wild swimming, while Anchor Head beach offers a smaller, rocky cove. The town is also becoming a cultural hub, hosting the Weston Wallz Festival each July as part of UpFest, Europe's largest street art and graffiti festival.
Despite its past reputation, the cost of living in Weston-super-Mare remains lower than many other seaside towns, with average property prices around £250,000 in August 2025. The town's transformation is attracting visitors seeking affordable, quintessentially British seaside holidays.
