Ruben Amorim Could Do Man Utd a £43m Transfer Favour
Ruben Amorim Could Do Man Utd a £43m Transfer Favour

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United following a draw at Leeds in January, ending a tumultuous tenure marked by poor results and a infamous press conference. The Portuguese head coach and the club cut ties dramatically, with behind-the-scenes strains played out in public.

Carrick's Success and Amorim's New Role

Since then, both parties have landed on their feet. United's interim appointment of Michael Carrick proved a resounding success, turning the club's fortunes around on and off the pitch. Qualification for next season's Champions League justified Ineos' decision to dismiss Amorim, whom Sir Jim Ratcliffe had previously spoken highly of.

Amorim, meanwhile, has taken charge at AC Milan, another huge club gambling on the former Sporting manager. Due to the nature of his exit, there is little love lost between him and United. However, that could benefit the Reds this summer.

Rafael Leao's Uncertain Future

United have been linked with Milan winger Rafael Leao, who scored for Portugal in a 5-0 World Cup victory over Uzbekistan. When asked about his future under Amorim, Leao told reporters: "He is a very good coach, I will make a decision after the World Cup." This softer stance contrasts with his earlier comments: "I’m proud as I made history at AC Milan but I want a new chapter. I feel ready to play in another league. I did my best for Milan, but it’s time to try another challenge."

Leao, 27, has expressed admiration for United and Cristiano Ronaldo, strengthening links to Manchester. A left winger is among United's targets, but the club would do well to avoid this deal.

Why United Should Avoid Leao

At 27, Leao does not fit the ideal age for an Ineos signing, and he has no Premier League experience. Valued at £43m by Milan, the price tag is considerable for a club still watching its pennies. United want to strengthen multiple areas, making this expenditure poor value. Such a fee would be better spent on players fitting the Ineos model.

If Leao decides to stay at Milan because of Amorim's arrival, the former United boss might actually be doing the Reds a favour. Amorim's presence could discourage Leao from pushing for a move, saving United from an expensive and ill-fitting transfer.
