United Airlines Ends Air Mile Rewards for Basic Economy Passengers
United Airlines Ends Air Mile Rewards for Basic Economy

In a significant shift for airline loyalty schemes, tens of millions of passengers flying with United Airlines will soon lose the ability to earn air mile rewards when booking basic economy fares. The carrier has announced sweeping changes to its MileagePlus program, effective from April 2, which will see award miles completely eliminated for those purchasing the most budget-friendly ticket class.

End of an Era for Basic Economy Rewards

Currently, United operates its free-to-join MileagePlus loyalty program, allowing passengers to accumulate miles based on their spending. Under the existing framework, a standard MileagePlus member booking a United Basic Economy fare earns five award miles for every US dollar spent on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, excluding taxes. However, this benefit will vanish entirely come April, marking a fundamental departure from previous reward structures.

Strategic Push Toward Co-Branded Credit Cards

This move forms part of a broader strategic initiative by United Airlines to incentivize more customers to enroll in its co-branded credit cards, which will continue to offer mileage-earning opportunities. The airline provides approximately six co-branded credit and debit card options through Chase, encompassing both personal and business accounts. Annual fees for these cards range from zero for the United Gateway Card to a substantial $695 for the premium United Club Card, which includes exclusive perks such as airport lounge access and complimentary checked bags.

Nevertheless, a significant barrier exists for many passengers: these cards are typically accessible only to US consumers and business owners with good to excellent credit ratings. Most new applicants must satisfy stringent credit and residency criteria to qualify, potentially excluding a considerable portion of the airline's customer base from these enhanced benefits.

Industry Alignment with Competitors

United now aligns itself with major competitors Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, both of which have previously implemented similar policies. Delta ceased awarding miles for basic economy bookings in December, while American Airlines made the change early in 2022. This industry-wide trend signals a concerted effort among leading carriers to reshape loyalty programs around financial products rather than flight purchases alone.

Enhanced Benefits for Cardholders

For tickets purchased on or after April 2, primary MileagePlus cardholders will earn up to twice as many miles per dollar on United flights compared to non-cardholders. Those utilizing their United card for ticket purchases will accrue additional miles on top of this enhanced rate. For instance, top-tier MileagePlus 1K members who pay for eligible flights with a United Club card could earn up to 17 miles per dollar spent—a rate United highlights as among the highest offered by any US airline loyalty program.

Cardholders will also receive a minimum 10 percent discount on all United award tickets, with MileagePlus Premier members enjoying at least 15 percent off. These adjustments are designed to deliver greater value to those who hold United's financial products, creating a clear tiered system of rewards.

Executive Commentary on Program Evolution

Announcing these changes, Andrew Nocella, United's chief commercial officer, emphasized that the updates aim to reward the airline's most loyal customers. "The most rewarding way to fly United is as a MileagePlus member, and the best way to get the most value from the MileagePlus program is to have one of our credit or debit cards," Nocella stated.

He further elaborated: "MileagePlus is designed to reward loyalty to United, and our best customers deserve the best benefits in the industry. MileagePlus members can now earn more miles faster with a United card—and every one of those miles will go further with our always-on award ticket discounts and expanded access to Saver Award fares."

Global Impact on Passenger Millions

The changes are poised to affect millions of passengers worldwide. United Airlines transported approximately 181 million passengers in 2025, maintaining its status as one of the globe's largest carriers. Recent operational data indicates the airline routinely serves well over 170 million customers annually, averaging more than 496,000 passengers per day. This scale underscores the profound implications of the policy shift for a vast international traveler demographic.
