Cabin Air Filter Must Be Replaced Every 20,000 Miles, Experts Warn
Cabin Air Filter Must Be Replaced Every 20,000 Miles

With temperatures forecast to reach 38°C this week, car repair finance specialists at Bumper have highlighted that cabin air filters are a crucial component that must be replaced every 20,000 miles. The cabin air filter cleans outside air before it enters the passenger compartment, removing pollen, dust, exhaust fumes, and mold to ensure occupants breathe cleaner air.

Why Regular Replacement Is Essential

Bumper explained that most cabin air filters are rated for between 20,000 and 30,000 miles. If the service history does not show a replacement, it is advisable to change it. An old filter may harbour mould or dirt, causing unpleasant smells and contaminating the air. It also restricts airflow, forcing the air conditioning and heating systems to strain.

The RAC has previously stated that cabin filters do not last the lifetime of the vehicle and must be replaced periodically. Motorists can look for signs of a failing filter, including reduced or inconsistent airflow, no temperature change when adjusting settings, strong odours, and a fogged-up windscreen.

Cost and Maintenance

Replacing a cabin air filter is relatively inexpensive. Motorists can expect to pay around £60 for the component and fitting. The RAC recommends checking the cabin air filter as part of regular car maintenance, noting that it can be included in an annual service.

Bumper added: “The filters are relatively inexpensive and should not take long to fit.” Ensuring the filter is clean helps protect the air conditioning system from blockages and maintains efficient operation during hot weather.
