UK Motorway Services Face Dual Blow: Tebay Shop Closes Temporarily, A37 Station Enters Liquidation
Motorway Services Hit: Tebay Closes, A37 Station in Liquidation

UK Motorway Services Face Dual Operational Challenges

Two prominent UK service stations are confronting significant operational hurdles, with one announcing temporary closures and another set to enter liquidation. These developments highlight ongoing pressures within the roadside retail and hospitality sector, affecting both motorists and local businesses.

Tebay Services Farm Shop Temporarily Shuts for Improvements

The beloved Westmorland Farmshop and Kitchen at Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria has revealed temporary closures throughout February as the business undertakes essential improvements to its premises. This popular destination, a firm favourite among motorists, will close briefly on specific dates, including Tuesday, February 24, in the morning.

Tebay Services stated that while the farm shop is affected, their filling stations and kitchen/food hall will remain open as usual during this period. The company encouraged visitors to check their website for updated opening hours and expressed gratitude for customers' patience, noting they aim to reopen the farm shops earlier if possible.

Potential Extended Closure Due to Motorway Works

Concerns have been raised about potential extended disruptions at Tebay Services as National Highways considers a four-year closure scheme for Junction 38 of the M6 to replace eight bridges. Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrats MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, warned that such a closure could severely impact local shops, citing a lack of consultation or mitigation plans.

Farron emphasized the extent of disruption would be substantial, with reports indicating zero outreach from authorities regarding alternative arrangements for businesses and travelers.

SRT Petroleum on A37 to Enter Liquidation in April

In a separate development, SRT Petroleum, which operates a petrol station on the A37 between Dorchester and Bristol, is due to enter liquidation in April. The company ceased trading in January following increases in rent and other operational costs, coupled with a reduction in trade.

Daniel Harrison from Bridgewood Financial Solutions confirmed that the director is taking steps to realise the company's remaining assets before proceeding with voluntary liquidation. Bridgewood is assisting with this process and expects the company to formally enter liquidation in April.

Service Station Amenities to Remain Operational

Despite SRT Petroleum's shutdown, the petrol station itself is anticipated to stay open, continuing to serve customers with amenities including a Greggs, Costa Express, Budgens, and a 24-hour off-licence. This ensures that essential services for motorists and local residents will remain available, albeit under potential new management or operational changes.

The dual announcements underscore the financial and logistical challenges facing service stations across the UK, from temporary maintenance closures to permanent business liquidations driven by economic pressures.
