New Direct Train Service to Connect Three Scandinavian Cities from Just £12

Private Swedish railway operator Snälltåget has announced the launch of a new long-distance train route that will directly link Malmö, Gothenburg, and Oslo starting this summer. The service, which debuts on 15 June, will offer tickets from as little as 149 Swedish krona (SEK), approximately £12.20, providing an affordable travel option across Scandinavia.

Journey Details and Schedule

The six-and-a-half-hour daytime journey will traverse Sweden's picturesque west coast before crossing the border into Norway, terminating in Oslo. In addition to the three major cities, the train will make stops at several other destinations, including Lund, Helsingborg, Halmstad, Varberg, Trollhättan, Sarpsborg, and Fredrikstad.

Daily services will operate with one train in each direction. From Malmö to Oslo, departures are scheduled for 6:38 am, arriving at 1:16 pm, except on Sundays when the train leaves slightly later at 7:05 am. The return route from Oslo to Malmö will run in the afternoon, departing at 2:48 pm and arriving at 9:25 pm.

Onboard Amenities and Policies

Tickets include allowance for two pieces of hand luggage and one smaller personal item. However, non-folding bicycles are not permitted on board. The service is pet-friendly, allowing one pet per passenger for an additional fee of SEK 29.80 (£2.40).

Passengers will have access to the onboard restaurant, Krogen, which offers a range of dining options. Snälltåget recommends booking a table and pre-ordering meals when purchasing train tickets. While the specific menu for this route is yet to be announced, other Snälltåget journeys feature hot meals such as pasta with mushrooms, beef and potato gratin with lingonberries, and overnight baked beef roast, starting from 159 SEK (£13).

Breakfast bundles, including cheese rolls, cinnamon buns, juice, and hot drinks, are available for SEK 99 (£8) when booked in advance. Krogen also provides a self-service counter selling coffee, tea, soft drinks, sandwiches, pastries, and sweets.

Connections and Additional Services

Upon arrival in Malmö, travellers can seamlessly continue their journey to Berlin by switching trains, offering a convenient route from Oslo to the German capital. Snälltåget also operates a night train from Malmö to Berlin, with stops in Copenhagen and Hamburg.

The railway company further connects various European cities through its daytime services, including routes like Copenhagen–Malmö–Stockholm and Hamburg–Copenhagen–Stockholm. Additionally, Snälltåget runs overnight services to Austria from Stockholm and rural northern Sweden, as well as services to Mora for the annual Vasaloppet cross-country ski race.

This new route enhances travel options in Scandinavia, promoting sustainable and budget-friendly transport across the region.
