Newcastle Bus Station Reopens After Heatwave-Hindered Works

Eldon Square Bus Station in Newcastle reopened this morning after improvement works were hindered by a heatwave that saw temperatures reach 30C last week. Workers faced challenges as the resurfacing materials used do not respond well to extreme heat, but the team persevered and managed to lay the new road surface, keeping the project on track.

Resurfacing Completed Despite Heatwave

Photos shared by Newcastle City Council on Friday afternoon show the difference following completion of the main resurfacing work. Over the weekend, work continued to complete road markings ahead of the reopening this morning. The station closed on June 10 to allow for a series of upgrades to ensure the site can continue to serve passengers for years to come.

Upgrades Include Drainage and Safety Improvements

The improvements included resurfacing the main bus station area, new road markings, improved drainage to prevent flooding, and fixing and replacing guardrails. Old and broken detector units were removed, damaged kerbs at bus stands were repaired, and several manholes were replaced and rebuilt.

Next Phase: Traffic Signals and Junction Upgrades

Now that the station has reopened, work will begin on upgrading traffic signals, paving, and crossing facilities at the Gallowgate/Percy Street junction. Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be in place, and commuters are advised to allow more time for their journeys.
