Transport prices to the MetLife Stadium for the 2026 World Cup have been significantly reduced following widespread criticism from fans. The initial announcement of exorbitant fares had sparked outrage among supporters, including those from England, who were expected to pay sky-high prices to attend matches.
Price Reductions Confirmed
Previously, an 18-mile journey from Penn Station to the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was set to cost $150 (£111) during the tournament, a stark contrast to the regular return fare of approximately $12.90 (£9.50). Additionally, a shuttle bus service was priced at $80 (£59). However, following intense backlash, these prices have been slashed. The train fare will now be around $98 (£73), while the shuttle bus will cost just $20 (£15).
Official Statements
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherril announced the changes on social media, stating: "Good news: Ahead of NJ Transit World Cup train tickets going on sale, NJ Transit is lowering ticket prices to $98 without New Jersey taxpayer money. Thank you to our partners for helping make this possible."
New York Governor Kathy Hochul added: "Hosting the World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for New Yorkers, and we are making this world class event as affordable and accessible as possible. Cheaper shuttle bus service is a no-brainer — saving fans money and making it easier to get to matches, especially for New Yorkers who have access to exclusive tickets at this new, lower price. This is your World Cup, and from Buffalo to Brooklyn, New Yorkers should be able to enjoy every moment of it."
FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ Host Committee CEO Alex Lasry also commented: "Creating a World Cup experience that is accessible for both fans visiting our region and the people who call New York and New Jersey home is a core priority for us. We’re incredibly grateful to Governor Hochul for helping us expand shuttle capacity and reduce roundtrip fares from $80 to $20. These improvements will provide an affordable and convenient transportation option while furthering our mission to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime event for residents and visitors alike."
