Iowa Authorities Crack 15-Year-Old Cold Case of Murdered Realtor

West Des Moines police have announced a major breakthrough in a chilling cold case that has remained unsolved for fifteen years. Authorities have charged Kristin Elizabeth Ramsey, aged 53, with first-degree murder for the killing of 27-year-old realtor Ashley Okland back in 2011.

The Fatal Shooting at a Model Townhome

On April 8, 2011, Ashley Okland was hosting an open house at a model townhome when she was shot twice. According to Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa, an employee with Ruttland Homes, the developer of the property, heard commotion outside the townhouse. Upon investigating, the employee discovered Okland with fatal wounds and immediately called 911.

The young realtor was rushed to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, where she was pronounced dead. The case quickly became a high-profile investigation, but for years, no arrests were made, leaving Okland's family and the community in anguish.

A Press Conference Reveals the Arrest

At a press conference on Wednesday morning, West Des Moines Assistant Police Chief Jody Hayes addressed the arrest, stating, 'Ashley's story has kept many of us awake at night, revisiting the details over and over in our minds.' He added, 'Searching for that missing piece that would tie everything together and lead us down the right path to identifying a person that was responsible for this act.'

However, Hayes notably did not reveal what that 'missing piece' was or what new information led to the break in the decade-and-a-half-old case. He emphasized, 'As significant as this arrest is, our work is not done yet. To maintain the integrity of the judicial process, the West Des Moines Police Department is unable to release any additional investigative information regarding this case.'

Possible Connection Between Victim and Suspect

At the time of the murder, Kristin Elizabeth Ramsey worked as an administrative assistant and sales manager for Ruttland Homes, the same company that Ashley Okland was a realtor for, according to the Des Moines Register. This connection suggests that the two women likely knew each other, but police have not shared Ramsey's suspected motive for the killing.

Ramsey is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2 million cash-only bond, as per Dallas County arrest records. Her first court appearance was on Wednesday, with her next one scheduled for April 10. If convicted of first-degree murder, Ramsey will face life in prison without the possibility of parole, as Iowa does not have capital punishment.

Family's Long Wait for Justice

The break in Okland's murder case comes years after her family members feared it had gone cold and would never be solved. On the fourth anniversary of her death, police revealed they had followed up on almost 900 leads and interviewed around 500 people.

At the press conference, Okland's brother, Josh, expressed gratitude, saying, 'Today is a day my family has thought about very often over the last 14 years.' Her sister, Brittany Bruce, added, 'That Friday afternoon when Ashley was taken from us seems so long ago. We had lost our hope in finding answers and having any justice for Ashley. It was really difficult to accept that the case had gone cold.'

Iowa Cold Case Unit Praised

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird also spoke at the press conference, highlighting the role of the Iowa Cold Case Unit. She stated, 'Today is why we created the Iowa Cold Case Unit... I hoped and prayed this day would come. No one should ever get away with murder. Families deserve answers, and there needs to be justice for every victim.'

Ashley Okland's obituary described her as 'a beautiful girl inside and out' who enjoyed traveling, concerts, golfing, exercising, and staying busy. The resolution of this case brings a measure of closure to her loved ones, though many questions about the motive remain unanswered.
