Human remains identified as mother missing for nearly 20 years in Leicester
Remains of mother missing since 2006 identified

Human remains discovered in Leicester scrubland have been formally identified as those of a mother who vanished nearly two decades ago, bringing a tragic end to a long-standing mystery.

A Decades-Long Mystery

Malgorzata Wnuczek, a 27-year-old Polish national living in Leicester, disappeared on 31 May 2006. She had recently separated from her husband, the father of her six-year-old daughter. The last confirmed sighting of Ms Wnuczek, known affectionately as Gosia by her family, was as she boarded a bus from her workplace at Peter Jackson Logistics on Sunningdale Road, heading towards Leicester city centre.

Her final contact with relatives was a text message sent two days before she went missing. Despite extensive searches and appeals over the years, no trace of her was found until October of this year.

The Discovery and Investigation

In a significant breakthrough, Leicestershire Police announced that remains had been located in scrubland off the Great Central Way, near Watkin Road. The discovery followed information from Polish police, which had previously prompted searches of the River Soar between Mill Lane and Upperton Road in June 2023.

The recovered remains were sent for forensic testing, which has now confirmed they belong to Ms Wnuczek. The force also revealed that a 39-year-old man was arrested in the Greater Manchester area on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice. He was subsequently released with no further action taken against him.

Ongoing Inquiry and Family's Anguish

Detective Superintendent Jenni Greenway stated that while the identification ends almost twenty years of uncertainty about Ms Wnuczek's whereabouts, it does not bring closure to her grieving family. "First and foremost, I’d like to express my deepest condolences to Malgorzata’s family," she said. "I know it won’t provide closure or end their ongoing grief."

The investigation into her death remains active and open. Police are preparing a file for the coroner and continue to work closely with authorities in Poland. Detective Superintendent Greenway renewed an appeal for information, emphasising that "it’s never too late to help" and urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.

This development marks a sombre chapter in one of Leicester's most enduring cold cases, yet many questions surrounding the circumstances of Ms Wnuczek's death remain unanswered.
