Horse racing legend Frankie Dettori, 55, has been hospitalised after a serious road traffic collision in Newmarket, Suffolk, on Wednesday evening. The former jockey sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb when the car he was driving was struck by another vehicle, causing it to spin and flip over.
Details of the Accident
According to a statement from his management company, H Talent Management, the accident occurred on July 1. Another vehicle hit the rear passenger side of Dettori's car, leading to the spin and rollover. Emergency services attended the scene, and Dettori was taken to hospital, where he remains for further scans and observation.
Statement from Management
H Talent Management confirmed: 'Frankie was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb. His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observation.' The statement also noted that Dettori thanked the emergency services and medical staff, and requested privacy during his recovery.
Impact on Dettori's Career
Dettori retired from riding earlier this year after a legendary career with hundreds of top-level wins worldwide. He had been scheduled for a one-off return in September for the Legends race at Doncaster's St Leger Festival, but his focus is now on recovery. He last rode competitively in Britain in October 2023.
