A tragic domestic violence incident in Maryland has resulted in the death of a 47-year-old woman, allegedly at the hands of her estranged husband, who subsequently turned himself in to authorities. The Howard County Police Department responded to a distress call shortly after 8:00 AM on Sunday, reporting that Alexander Stephenson, 53, had stabbed his wife, Amethyst Stephenson, and fled the scene.
Discovery at the Scene
Officers swiftly arrived at Amethyst's residence, a luxurious $900,000 property situated in a wooded area near Ellicott City, just outside Baltimore. Upon entry, they discovered Amethyst deceased from multiple stab wounds. Police confirmed she was estranged from her husband and that Alexander did not reside at the home where the murder occurred.
Surrender and Charges
Alexander Stephenson was immediately declared a wanted suspect. He surrendered voluntarily at 10:30 AM on Sunday at the Howard County Police Department's northern district station in Ellicott City. At the time of his surrender, he presented with non-life-threatening self-inflicted wrist injuries.
He was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment and evaluation, where he remained as of Monday afternoon. Upon medical release, he will be booked into the Howard County Detention Center. Alexander faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and violation of a protective order, though the duration of the estrangement and the specifics of the protective order remain unclear.
Legal Implications and Sentencing
Under Maryland law, a conviction for first-degree murder carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The state abolished capital punishment in 2013, with the last execution occurring in 2005, ensuring that life imprisonment is the severest possible sentence in this case.
Social Media and Family Tributes
Amethyst Stephenson maintained an active Facebook presence, with the most recent photo of the couple posted in July 2025 and a wedding photo from May 2022. Following her death, her father, Steve Willey, shared a heartfelt post on Facebook, urging those who knew Amethyst to remember the extraordinary moments they shared.
The post garnered emotional responses from six individuals close to the family, who expressed their condolences and shared fond memories. One commenter described Amethyst as "a beautiful light" with a "radiant smile," while another recalled valuable life advice she had given. A third offered support to the grieving family.
The Howard County Police Department has not released further details regarding the investigation. The community now mourns the loss of Amethyst Stephenson as legal proceedings against her estranged husband commence.
