California Farming Mogul Michael Abatti Accused of Murdering Estranged Wife in Arizona
Farming Mogul Accused of Murdering Estranged Wife

A prominent farming magnate from California has been arrested and charged with murder, accused of making a 400-mile journey to Arizona to fatally shoot his estranged wife amidst a bitter divorce.

Arrest and Allegations in a High-Profile Case

Michael Abatti, a member of an influential farming family in California's Imperial Valley, was taken into custody on Tuesday following an indictment by an Arizona grand jury. He stands accused of murder in the death of his wife of 31 years, Kerri Ann Abatti. The 59-year-old mother of three was discovered on 20 November 2025 at the couple's second home in Pinetop, Arizona, and died from gunshot wounds while en route to hospital.

According to Chief Deputy Brian Swanty of the Navajo County Sheriff's Office, the suspect is alleged to have travelled from his residence in El Centro, California, to the wooded property in Pinetop to carry out the shooting before immediately returning to California. The divorce was still pending on the day Kerri Ann Abatti died.

A Contentious Separation and Financial Dispute

The couple had separated in August 2023, with Michael Abatti remaining in California and Kerri Ann moving to the Arizona home to be closer to her ageing parents. She filed for divorce that October, citing irreconcilable differences. Court records indicate the proceedings became highly contentious and protracted.

Kerri Ann Abatti had accused her husband of "stonewalling" her attempts to understand their finances and real estate holdings, while he allegedly made changes without consulting her or her lawyer. She reportedly told the court she was "barely scraping by" on the temporary monthly spousal support she had been awarded.

Evidence Gathering and Cross-State Investigation

The breakthrough in the case came on 2 December, when detectives executed search warrants at properties and vehicles linked to the Abatti family in El Centro. The Navajo County Sheriff's Office stated this operation yielded a "significant amount of evidence" that led investigators to name Michael Abatti as a suspect.

Detectives collaborated with multiple police agencies across Arizona and California to establish probable cause for the arrest. The investigation pieced together a timeline suggesting a deliberate cross-state journey to commit the crime.

Kerri Ann Abatti, formerly Kerri Ann Penrod, was a well-known figure in her local community. She was a prom queen and Miss Navajo County in her youth, a talented violinist, and later worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Abatti Farms, LLC. She had left her role as an office manager to raise the couple's three children, who all attended private school. The family was known for a luxurious lifestyle, with first-class holidays to Europe and Hawaii.

Michael Abatti is currently held at the Imperial County Jail awaiting extradition to Arizona to face the murder charge.
