Former Vet Jon Ruben Jailed for 23 Years Over Summer Camp Abuse

Jon Ruben, a 76-year-old retired veterinary surgeon, has been sentenced to 23 years and 10 months in prison for drugging and sexually abusing children at his Christian summer camp in Nottingham. The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, where Ruben was once seen as a pillar of society.

Deception and Betrayal in Nottingham

Ruben operated the Stathern Children's Holiday Fund, offering free three-day summer camps at Stathern Lodge, located 18 miles from Nottingham. The camps were immensely popular, with spaces filling months in advance and receiving thousands of pounds in donations from charitable groups. Many children from deprived areas like Aspley and Clifton attended, participating in activities themed around the Olympics, including football and dancing workshops.

However, behind this charitable facade, Ruben harboured a dark secret. He used his veterinary knowledge to procure fast-acting tranquillisers from the dark web, which he then injected into sweets wrapped in bright purple packaging. Ruben would challenge children to eat these treats quickly in what he called the "sweet game," with the winner receiving a chocolate bar as a reward.

Horrific Crimes Uncovered

As the children lay sedated, Ruben sexually abused two of them during the last holiday camp in July. He even drugged his own wife, Susan, who was also involved in the camp, to carry out his attacks undetected. The abuse was only exposed when Ruben's step-son raised the alarm after discovering syringes, baby oil, and white powder in Ruben's room at the camp.

Police investigations revealed a "huge quantity" of indecent images of children on Ruben's electronic devices, many of the most serious category. Officers also found sex toys in his room and handwritten notes showing "a battle with himself" over his sexual interest in children aged eight to twelve. Disturbingly, an "application form" for an online paedophile group was discovered, in which Ruben detailed his preferences.

Community Devastation and Legal Proceedings

Ruben pleaded guilty to the attacks on the two children, eight counts of child cruelty, and three counts of making indecent images of children. Temporary Detective Inspector Neil Holden of Leicestershire Police described Ruben as a "vile, horrific offender" who exploited his position of trust to access vulnerable children for his own sexual gratification.

"Jon Ruben is a vile, horrific offender who has used his position of trust in the community to allow him to have access to children, in a number of examples where the children are quite vulnerable, and allow himself to gain his own satisfaction, for his own sexual gratification," said Det Insp Holden.

During police interviews, Ruben initially refused to comment on his crimes and showed little remorse. It was only at a court appearance last week, when he sobbed after pleading guilty to drugging his wife, that he displayed any emotion.

Impact on the Local Community

The case has devastated the community in Ruddington, where Ruben lived in an affluent semi-detached home and was a member of St Peter's Church. Neighbours and church-goers were unwilling to discuss the case, with one describing it as a "huge betrayal of the church, its community, the whole city."

Ruben's charity also ran term-time school clubs for 109 children at three schools, including St. Peter's Junior School in Ruddington. Donations to the camps exceeded £12,000 last year, with contributions from groups like the Roseberry Trust and the JN Derbyshire trust. Nottingham High School, linked to one donor, emphasised that they had no involvement in the camp's operations and were deeply shocked by Ruben's actions.

Moving Forward

Stathern Lodge, owned by the Braithwaite Gospel Trust, continues to host summer camps. A member of the trust expressed hope that the community could move on from the incident, with some even praying for the area to be "cleansed." Police have confirmed that Ruben acted alone, and the focus remains on supporting the victims and their families as they grapple with this profound betrayal of trust.
