Man Abandons Marriage for Biological Mother After Decades-Long Separation
A married man who spent over twenty years unaware of his biological origins has shocked his family by leaving his wife to pursue a sexual relationship with the mother who gave him up for adoption as an infant. Kim West, a British national, was just 19 years old and studying in California when she gave birth to her son Ben. Facing financial and mental health struggles, she placed him for adoption after one week and returned to the United Kingdom.
Decades of Silence Broken by a Fateful Reunion
For more than thirty years, Kim and Ben had no contact whatsoever. This changed dramatically in 2013 when Ben, now married and residing in Colorado, decided to search for his biological parents. He successfully tracked Kim down and initiated contact by sending her a letter. What began as cautious electronic correspondence and phone calls quickly intensified, culminating in an in-person meeting arranged for 2014.
According to both individuals, the connection was immediate and overwhelmingly powerful. Within mere days of their first face-to-face encounter, their relationship escalated into a sexual affair. The repercussions of this development were swift and devastating for Ben's existing family life.
Confession to Wife and Immediate Fallout
Ben later revealed that after becoming involved with his mother, he confessed to his wife, Victoria, a statement that left her utterly distraught. He admitted he could no longer be intimate with Victoria unless he imagined she was his mother. Kim reflected on the early period, describing the household atmosphere as tense and uncomfortable. She noted that Victoria was polite but distant, and feelings of jealousy rapidly emerged.
"(Victoria) was welcoming, yet I couldn't warm to her," Kim stated. "I felt a growing sense of competition and when Ben touched her I felt jealous." Kim claimed Victoria grew increasingly uneasy with the amount of time Ben was dedicating to his biological mother, frequently calling him during their interactions. Ben eventually disclosed that Victoria was distressed about his time with Kim, even referring to her as his "mummy girlfriend."
Just days after the affair commenced, Ben confessed everything to his wife. Shortly thereafter, he walked out of the marriage entirely and relocated to Michigan to live with Kim.
Public Outrage and Legal Controversy
When their relationship became public knowledge, it ignited widespread outrage and condemnation. Under Michigan state law, consensual incest between adults is classified as a serious criminal offence. Convictions can carry potential prison sentences and mandatory registration as sex offenders, highlighting the severe legal ramifications they face.
Despite the intense backlash and legal scrutiny, the pair have firmly rejected the label of incest. Instead, they describe their bond as "Genetic Sexual Attraction," referencing a controversial and largely unaccepted psychological theory. This theory posits that close relatives who meet for the first time as adults may experience intense attraction due to missing early-life bonding experiences.
The case continues to provoke debate about family dynamics, adoption reunions, and the boundaries of legal and social norms in complex interpersonal relationships.
