Florida mother murdered by husband after NFL game row, stepdaughter shot
Mother killed protecting children after NFL dispute

A family Christmas in Florida was shattered by a horrific act of violence, after a mother was shot dead by her husband following a dispute over an American football game.

A Deadly Argument Over a Game

Crystal Roure was fatally shot by her husband, Jason Kenney, on 22 December 2025, just three days before Christmas. The argument began when Crystal asked Jason to turn off an NFL game he was watching.

As the disagreement escalated, Crystal, fearing for her children's safety, instructed her 12-year-old son to run to a neighbour's house and call 911. As the boy fled, he heard gunshots ring out inside the family home.

Children Caught in the Crossfire

When police arrived at the scene in Polk County, they discovered a devastating situation. Crystal Roure was found dead. Her 13-year-old stepdaughter had been shot in the face but was miraculously still alive.

Sheriff Grady Judd later revealed the teenager's harrowing account. "She said, 'I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,'" Judd told a press conference.

The bullet struck the bridge of the girl's nose and ricocheted through the top of her head. The couple's one-year-old daughter was found unharmed at the property. Jason Kenney had fled the scene.

A Family Destroyed and a Killer's End

Kenney drove to his late father's home, where he called his sister to confess he had done "something very bad." He subsequently turned the gun on himself.

Investigators searching the family home found a poignant note written by Crystal to her husband, pleading with him to seek help. The note read, "You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God."

While one family member stated Kenney had been abusive and had "beat on Crystal for a while," the sheriff's office confirmed there were no official records of prior domestic violence between the couple, who had been married for two years.

The three surviving children are now in the custody of their grandparents. The family has established a GoFundMe page for support, describing the loss as "heartbreaking" and the situation "unimaginable."

Reflecting on the tragedy, Sheriff Judd said, "He absolutely destroyed a family. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under the tree, just like the nuclear family should be ... and it ends up this way."
