Nursery Worker Sentenced for Decades of Child Abuse Following Staff Alert
A paedophile nursery worker who sexually abused children in his care for years was exposed after a colleague raised concerns about him secretly recording distressed youngsters, a court has heard. Vincent Chan, 45, spent almost two decades assaulting and covertly photographing children while working in schools and a nursery across north London.
Discovery and Arrest
Chan was finally caught when a staff member at the £2,000-a-month Bright Horizons Finchley Road nursery flagged his "unusual and inappropriate" behaviour in June 2024. The colleague reported that Chan had shown her a video of a child falling asleep in their food, which he had set to music, using a staff iPad. He was suspended immediately, and police were called.
Officers discovered a sickening cache of thousands of images and videos documenting his crimes. Chan, a British national from Stanhope Avenue in Finchley, was arrested on suspicion of child neglect days later, but evidence quickly revealed he had been abusing and filming very young girls in his care.
Court Proceedings and Charges
At Wood Green Crown Court, Chan pleaded guilty to 56 offences, including five counts of sexual assault by penetration, four counts of sexual assault by touching, 11 counts of voyeurism, and 23 counts of taking indecent images of children. He also admitted six counts of outraging public decency, one sexual assault on a female, and six counts of making indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Philip Stott told the hearing that on 25 May 2024, the nursery made a referral about Chan filming children who were clearly distressed, crying, wetting themselves, or eating their own mucus. He superimposed audio or imagery over the videos in an apparent attempt at humour.
Victims and Timeline
The offending dates back to 2007 and involves at least 20 female victims, including girls as young as two years old. Police believe there may be other victims yet to be identified. Chan began targeting vulnerable children after joining St Mary's Church of England School in Finchley in October 2007, where he was hired as IT support but occasionally took classes and photographed events for the school website.
He worked at Bright Horizons from 2017, sexually abusing at least four little girls aged between two and four after passing an advanced vetting process to become an art specialist. He later became a nursery nurse and was promoted to room leader, but this limited his access to children, so he asked to be demoted to a role where he fed, dressed, and cleaned children.
Impact and Response
Around 20 family members of children previously at the nursery attended the court hearing. Police have contacted the families of approximately 1,200 children thought to have been in Chan's care since his career began. The Bright Horizons branch where the abuse occurred has now closed down.
A spokesman for the nursery chain, which faces legal action from parents, said: "We are shocked and appalled by this individual's horrific crimes. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the children and families affected. Whilst this individual's actions came to light after a colleague raised concerns, we fully accept that he was able to commit these crimes despite our safeguarding measures. We have commissioned an external expert to undertake a full review of our practices."
Broader Context
This case follows other recent nursery abuse convictions, including Nathan Bennett in Bristol, Vanessa George in Plymouth, Thomas Waller in Surrey, and Roksana Lecka in Twickenham. Chan, who had no previous convictions, has yet to explain why he carried out the offending.
A dedicated NSPCC helpline has been set up for anyone affected by Chan's offending, operating from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 6pm at weekends on 0800 028 0828. Reports to police can be made via OpLanark@met.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting reference CAD3697/1DEC.
