A 42-year-old woman in Poland was discovered in a state of severe malnutrition and critical health, reportedly just days away from death, after allegedly being locked in a single room by her parents for an astonishing 27 years. The woman, identified only as Mirrella, was last seen in public in 1998 when she was 15 years old in the southern Polish city of Świętochłowice.
Discovery and Immediate Response
Concerns were initially raised in July when police officers responded to a call at a block of flats following reports of a disturbance from neighbours. Deputy Inspector Anna Hryniak informed Polish publication Fakt that the 82-year-old landlady dismissed claims of any confrontation. However, officers spoke with Mirrella and, despite her insistence that there was no problem, summoned medical assistance immediately after observing her injuries.
Critical Health Condition and Public Reaction
Doctors determined that Mirrella was only days away from death due to infection, and she has been hospitalised for two months due to her critical condition. Her feet and overall physical state were described as dire. Local people have launched a fundraising campaign to support her, with one social media post highlighting the severity of her situation.
People who knew Mirrella believed she had left her family home almost three decades ago, but the truth turned out to be tragically different. Much remains unknown, and several facts cannot be revealed at this stage, but Prosecutor Agnieszka Kwatera has confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Life in Confinement
It is reported that Mirrella never visited a dentist or hairdresser during her confinement, with her hair and teeth now in such critical condition that they threaten her health, necessitating visits to a private clinic. She herself has expressed that she has never seen her city develop, missed out on countless experiences, and never obtained an ID card, went for a simple walk, or even stepped onto a balcony.
Broader Context of Similar Cases
This case follows the rescue of a six-year-old girl in Brazil last September, who had been locked inside her room for her entire life. The child was discovered in a severely neglected state, fed solely on liquids, never attended school, and hadn't been taught to speak. She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, septicaemia, and acute malnutrition, and had not received childhood immunisations.
Officers found the young girl in a darkened, squalid room with only a teddy bear, and due to her inability to communicate verbally, she interacted with child protection workers using rudimentary sounds. This highlights a disturbing pattern of extreme confinement cases that authorities are increasingly uncovering.
