Woman Details Years of Sexual Abuse by Father and Subsequent Family Rejection
A 22-year-old American woman has come forward with a devastating account of being raped by her own father as a teenager, resulting in a pregnancy, and experiencing profound betrayal from her mother, who dismissed her allegations. Speaking anonymously on the Other People's Lives podcast, the woman described a childhood where she initially believed she had a good relationship with her father, only to later recognise his behaviour as deeply abnormal.
Escalating Abuse and Coercive Control
The woman recounted that her father's inappropriate actions began with exposing her to sexual content online and on television, walking around naked at home, and providing her with cannabis as a teenager. She first sensed something was amiss around age 13, when he made sexualised comments about her friends, including remarking on one friend's appearance in a way that made her extremely uncomfortable.
From there, the situation intensified. Her father started commenting on her own body, framing it as her duty to please him. He then began requesting late-night massages while the rest of the family slept, gradually guiding her hands closer to his genitals. The abuse turned violently physical one night when he called her into the kitchen and raped her.
There wasn't much I could say at the time, she told podcast hosts Joe Santagato and Greg Dybec. Afterwards, he threatened her with severe consequences if she spoke out, warning that the family would disintegrate and they could end up homeless. I took keeping it a secret seriously because of the way he laid out those consequences, she explained.
Weekly Assaults and Maternal Neglect
The rapes continued weekly for approximately three years, primarily occurring in the basement of their family home. In a shocking revelation, the woman asserted that her mother likely knew about the abuse but chose to ignore it. She recalled her mother once saying, I'm going to find out what is going on between you two, but then never addressing the issue again.
I feel like she purposely ignored it and just allowed it to happen, the woman said, adding that her mother was often absent due to work commitments, leaving her emotionally and physically vulnerable. At age 16, after beginning her first relationship, she realised the profound abnormality of her father's actions compared to other families.
Breaking the Silence and Maternal Backlash
After leaving home for two months and cutting off contact with her parents, the woman disclosed the abuse while intoxicated at a party, finding relief in sharing the long-held secret. She then mustered the courage to confront her mother directly, hoping for support and intervention.
Instead, her mother reacted with anger and denial, accusing her of lying and insisting her husband was incapable of such acts. She starts to accuse me and say that her husband would never do that, that I'm lying and that I've always been a bad child, the woman recounted. The situation escalated further when her mother called the police in an attempt to have her arrested and later became physically violent towards her.
Legal Proceedings and Pregnancy Revelation
After reporting the abuse to authorities, her father was initially removed from the home during the investigation. However, her family continued to visit him, and after he was charged and jailed, they raised funds for his bail. During this period, the woman entered foster care and discovered she was pregnant, already in her second trimester.
DNA testing later confirmed the baby was her father's child, evidence that bolstered the criminal case. Describing herself as utterly broken, she made the difficult decision to place the child for adoption. As much as I did have good intentions for this child, I couldn't be her mother. I couldn't stop looking at this child and not see my father, she told the podcast hosts.
Father's Escape and Ongoing Recovery
Her father eventually secured bail again, then cut off his ankle monitor and fled to Africa. Authorities informed her they could not locate him, pressuring her to drop the case. She has since severed ties with family members who supported her father and is focusing on rebuilding her life through trauma therapy.
I am still rebuilding my life with the help of therapy after years of abuse, she concluded, emphasising the long-term impact of the ordeal and her journey toward healing.
