A man from Liverpool has pleaded not guilty to racially abusing Bournemouth and Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match at Anfield earlier this season.
Court Appearance and Bail Conditions
Mark Mogan, 47, of Templehill Close in Dovecot, Liverpool, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Monday, 22 December 2025. He formally denied a single charge of racially aggravated disorderly behaviour directed at the footballer.
Mogan, who was present in court, spoke only to confirm his personal details and enter his plea of not guilty. The court scheduled his trial for 22 April 2025, and it is understood that Antoine Semenyo is expected to attend the proceedings as a witness.
The magistrates released Mogan on bail with strict conditions. He must not contact Semenyo, either directly or through any third party, and is prohibited from referencing the player on social media. Crucially, as part of his bail, he is banned from attending any regulated football matches.
Details of the Alleged Anfield Incident
The alleged abuse is said to have occurred during the Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Bournemouth on 15 August. According to Merseyside Police, Semenyo reported being racially abused by a spectator in the first half of what was the opening weekend of the top-flight season.
In the 29th minute of the match, referee Anthony Taylor halted play after being informed of the allegation by Semenyo. Following this intervention, a man was identified and subsequently ejected from the stadium by stewards and police.
Despite the disruption, Semenyo showed remarkable focus, scoring twice in the second half to help Bournemouth fight back from two goals down. However, Liverpool ultimately secured a 4-2 victory.
Football's Response and Upcoming Fixture
In the immediate aftermath of the match in August, Liverpool Football Club issued a strong statement. A spokesperson said the club was aware of the allegation and unequivocally condemned racism and discrimination, stating it "has no place in society, or football".
The Football Association also expressed its concern over the allegation and pledged to ensure that appropriate action would be taken following the conclusion of the legal process.
The case casts a shadow over the next meeting between the two clubs. Bournemouth are scheduled to host Liverpool at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League next month, bringing the teams together again amidst the ongoing court proceedings.
