A racist thug whose brutal assault on an Asian taxi driver was captured on the vehicle's CCTV system has been sentenced to prison. The footage, released by Durham Constabulary, shows Jonathan Olley, 38, unleashing a torrent of racist abuse at the terrified cabbie before repeatedly punching him in the head.
Violent Confrontation Caught on Camera
Olley, who was so intoxicated that the driver requested £20 upfront for the journey, accused the man of 'ripping me off'. He then proceeded to elbow the driver in the face and strike him multiple times. The driver, in a desperate attempt to de-escalate the situation, pleaded, 'Just calm down man, you hurt me' and asked for 'just two minutes'.
Olley's response was a chilling threat: 'Drive the car now before I f***ing take your head off.' Minutes later, he escalated further, stating, 'Drive me to where I need to be now before I kill you and your full family'.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Teesside Crown Court heard that Olley had been drinking in Durham city centre on December 8 last year before entering the taxi. He demanded to be taken to West Cornforth in County Durham. Due to his evident intoxication, the driver insisted on payment upfront before commencing the seven-mile journey.
When the driver experienced difficulty locating the address, Olley's anger intensified rapidly. Police reported that he began 'raining punches into the victim's head, called him racial slurs, and threatened to kill his family'. The victim sustained injuries to his head and jaw as a direct result of the assault.
Olley, who works as a prison cleaner, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was subsequently jailed for one year and five months.
Victim Impact and Previous Offences
In a victim impact statement, the taxi driver expressed his profound fear during the incident. 'I was worried that he would not leave the vehicle and continue to assault me,' he stated. 'After the male exited the taxi I continued to work for approximately an hour-and-a-half, but during this time I was still scared and did not pick up anyone who was drunk. I then ended my shift early as I did not feel like I wanted to work anymore due to the assault and fear.'
The court was informed that Olley, from Gateshead, was already serving a suspended sentence at the time of this racist attack. His criminal record includes 20 previous convictions for 29 offences, encompassing battery and grievous bodily harm. In November of the previous year, he was convicted of attacking his partner on two separate occasions, one of which involved spitting on her. Additionally, he had been convicted of stalking a former partner in 2024.
Police Condemnation and Community Message
Following the sentencing on Monday, PC Bolden of Durham Constabulary issued a strong statement. 'Olley's behaviour towards the taxi driver, who was simply trying to do his job and provide a service for the community, was absolutely despicable. He was left terrified, fearing for his own safety, and unable to call for help due to being in an isolated area.'
PC Bolden added, 'I hope Olley uses his time in prison to reflect on his shameful behaviour and how his actions have affected his victim. Hate crime in any form will not be tolerated and I hope this result sends a clear message that anyone found to be committing such offences in County Durham and Darlington will be brought to justice.'
The case underscores the severe consequences of hate-fuelled violence and the importance of CCTV evidence in securing convictions for such despicable acts within the community.
