A shooting in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning has left one person dead and ten others injured. The suspect, who barricaded himself in a nearby building, was later found dead after an hours-long standoff with police, city officials confirmed around 11:30 a.m. local time.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong told reporters that the active shooter situation was resolved and the shooter was deceased, based on confirmation from a robot and drone footage. Earlier, she had reported 11 known victims, including one fatality. The names of the suspect and victims have not been released.
Police Chief Greg Snow stated that officers heard gunfire from the building and worked quickly to secure the area, deploying armored units with assistance from partner agencies. The scene remains active, with road closures expected to continue near the 4600 block of West Wall Street as the investigation proceeds.
Midland Memorial Hospital received nine of the shooting victims, three of whom have been discharged. Hospital officials told First Alert 7 that four patients required surgery. A family reunification centre has been set up at the hospital.
Mayor Blong urged the community to pray for the families affected, including the family of the deceased victim. Police continue to ask the public to avoid the area.
