Officer Anthony Carrasco of the San Diego Police Department stated that reports of gunfire at the mosque, located approximately 9 miles north of downtown San Diego, came in around 9:00 PM local time. It remains unclear whether the suspect is inside or outside the building, and whether the individual has been apprehended. The San Diego Police Department issued a statement describing the scene as “still active but contained.”

The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to its official website. The campus also houses the Al Rashid School, which offers courses in Arabic language, Islamic studies, and the Quran.

Evacuations and Response

Aerial television footage captured a harrowing scene as more than a dozen children were seen holding hands and being escorted out of the parking lot, which was surrounded by scores of police vehicles. The mosque, a white structure, is situated in a residential neighborhood comprising homes, apartments, and strip malls, including Middle Eastern restaurants and markets.

Governor Gavin Newsom's office confirmed that he was being briefed on the situation. A statement posted on the social platform X read: “We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities.”
