The police officer who was shot in the face while heroically protecting the public during the deadly Bondi Beach attack has been released from hospital, his family has confirmed.
A Night of Terror at an Iconic Beach
The horrific incident unfolded on the evening of December 14, just before 7pm, as hundreds of people gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea event at the world-famous Sydney beach. According to police allegations, Naveed Akram, 24, and his 50-year-old father Sajid Akram opened fire on the crowd using military-grade weapons.
The attack lasted for approximately nine minutes but left a devastating toll. Sixteen people, including gunman Sajid Akram, were killed. A further 42 people were injured and required urgent hospital treatment.
The Heroism of Probationary Constable Hibbert
Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert was among several officers already present at the beach when the shooting erupted. He and his son had just left their car near Archer Park and found themselves in the direct line of fire.
Disregarding his own safety, Constable Hibbert immediately began pulling members of the public to cover. It was during this act of bravery that he was struck by a bullet. The impact caused significant damage, with shrapnel severely injuring the nerves behind his eye.
Rushed to hospital in a critical condition, medical staff feared he might lose the eye due to the severity of the wound.
A Christmas Miracle: Recovery at Home
In a tremendous relief to his family and colleagues, Constable Hibbert has now been discharged from hospital and will continue his recovery at home. His family released a statement expressing their profound gratitude.
"Our family would like to share that Jack has now been discharged from hospital," the statement read. "While he is home, he is still recovering and will need space, support, and continued positive thoughts during this time. As a family, we couldn’t ask for anything more - having our Jack home, especially for Christmas, truly feels like a miracle."
His release marks a significant and positive step following the traumatic events of December 14. The investigation into the attack and the motives behind it continues.
