British Passenger Detained in Taiwan After Alleged Vaping and Assault on Flight

A 58-year-old British man has been detained by police in Taiwan following a series of alleged disruptive incidents on a long-haul flight from London. The passenger, who was reportedly wearing a Manchester United jacket, faced accusations of vaping, swearing at fellow travellers, and physically assaulting flight attendants during the 13-hour China Airlines journey.

Chaotic Flight Behaviour Captured on Video

Shocking footage has emerged showing the moment uniformed officers removed the British national from the aircraft upon arrival at Taoyuan International Airport on Tuesday, March 3. Witnesses reported that the man smoked an e-cigarette in his seat despite strict prohibitions, engaged in shouting matches with other passengers, and made inappropriate physical contact with cabin crew members.

The most serious allegation involves the passenger allegedly slapping a female flight attendant's buttocks with considerable force. Additional reports suggest he touched both male and female attendants inappropriately, raised crew members' hands while speaking to them, and planted kisses on their hands. During his removal from the plane, the man was heard apologising, reportedly saying: "I apologise, I'm sorry. I touched your bum, f*** sake."

Wife's Defence Sparks Passenger Outrage

The man's wife reportedly attempted to defend his behaviour during the flight, claiming "he likes to joke," which provoked strong reactions from other travellers. Passengers confronted the couple, telling the wife "it's not funny" and accusing her of being "an accomplice" to the disruptive conduct. One traveller reminded the British passenger: "You're in Taiwan now, not England."

Despite his wife's eventual plea for him to stop, saying "Everyone says you're being noisy," the alleged misconduct continued throughout the flight. The cabin crew formally reported the incidents to aviation police upon landing, leading to the man's immediate detention.

Legal Consequences and Airline Response

The British national now faces significant legal repercussions in Taiwan. Authorities have confirmed he will be fined for vaping on the aircraft, as electronic cigarettes and similar devices are strictly prohibited in the country. Furthermore, flight attendants may file additional complaints for harassment or public indecency, which could result in more serious charges.

A China Airlines spokesperson emphasised their zero-tolerance policy toward unruly passenger behaviour and confirmed full cooperation with legal proceedings. The airline reiterated that bringing e-cigarettes into Taiwan violates national laws and that such conduct jeopardises flight safety and passenger comfort.

Context of Recent Airline Incidents

This incident follows another recent case where Jet2 banned two passengers for life after a mid-air fight forced a flight diversion. Footage from that Turkey-to-Manchester flight showed physical altercations in the aisle, including one passenger being placed in a headlock. Jet2 stated they would vigorously pursue cost recovery from the disruptive travellers.

The Taiwan detention highlights growing concerns about passenger behaviour on international flights and the serious consequences travellers face when violating airline policies and local laws. Airlines worldwide are increasingly taking firm stances against misconduct that compromises safety and security protocols.
