Brown University Shooting: Police Release New Video of Suspect 'Casing' Area
Brown University Shooting: New Suspect Video Released

Police in Providence have released new surveillance footage showing an individual they believe was "casing the area" before a deadly shooting at Brown University that left two people dead and nine others wounded.

New Footage Shows Suspect's Movements

The video, captured on the East Side of Providence on Saturday afternoon, depicts a masked person walking in a residential neighbourhood near the university campus approximately two hours before the attack. The individual is seen wearing a black beanie, a green jacket, and black gloves.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Providence Police Chief Oscar L Perez stated the footage shows the person of interest conducting reconnaissance. "That's what criminals do prior to committing a crime," Perez explained. He urged the public to pay close attention to the individual's distinctive posture, gait, and body language to aid in identification.

Intense Manhunt and Public Appeal

The manhunt for the shooter, who was dressed in black, has been ongoing since the Saturday attack, which occurred during final exams. While a person of interest was briefly detained and released on Sunday, the investigation remains active. The FBI's premature declaration that the case was solved has drawn criticism.

Chief Perez confirmed that investigators are following up on a significant number of leads. "We have been receiving hundreds of tips. However, we're about close to 200 actionable tips that we're still conducting investigations on, which is incredible and is important," he said.

Authorities are also appealing for any video footage from residents near Waterman Avenue and Hope Street. Perez noted that footage from sources such as home security systems or vehicle cameras—including those on Teslas—dating back "at least a week" could be crucial.

Confidence from Officials and University Response

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha expressed confidence in the investigation during the conference, stating it is "going really well." He encouraged locals to trust in the experienced law enforcement and prosecution teams, who are receiving full support from state and city leaders.

Brown University President Christina Paxson also addressed the community on Tuesday, reaffirming the institution's commitment to safety. She acknowledged the natural anxiety following the tragedy but stressed, "the shooter is responsible."

The FBI is now offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the shooter.
