Irish actress Brenda Fricker, best known for her role as state-enrolled nurse Megan Roach in the original cast of BBC's Casualty, has spoken openly about her deteriorating health and long-standing battle with depression. The 81-year-old Oscar-winning star, who also appeared in My Left Foot and Home Alone 2, shared a heartbreaking update in 2025, telling The Guardian: 'I'm having a dreadful death.'
Fricker, who played Megan Roach in 65 episodes of the medical drama from its debut in 1986 until 1990, returned for a final appearance in August 2010 when her character took a lethal overdose after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Reflecting on her departure, she said she felt her character had 'lost' her 'wonderful sense of humour.'
Struggles with Depression and Isolation
In a 2021 interview on The Tommy Tiernan Show, the Dublin-born actress admitted she had not worked much for about a decade, explaining she wanted 'a rest.' When asked about her mental state, she revealed: 'I went to the doctor and he said I'm going to put you on stronger antidepressants, because I am a bit of a recluse.' She has been hospitalised multiple times for severe depression.
In 2024, Fricker starred in Tadhg O'Sullivan's experimental fiction drama The Swallow, playing an unnamed elderly woman reminiscing about her life. The role marked a rare recent performance for the actress.
Honour and Recognition
In February 2026, it was announced that Fricker would receive the Freedom of the City of Dublin, with her name inscribed on the Roll of Honorary Freedom. Dublin Lord Mayor Ray McAdam praised her 'Academy Award winning performance in My Left Foot,' calling it 'a landmark moment for Irish acting and Irish cinema.' He added: 'What makes her career so special is the body of work that followed, marked by honesty, depth and a rare ability to bring warmth and toughness in the same breath.'
Candid Reflections on Mortality
In a separate interview with Irish radio station RTE1, Fricker told host Brendan O'Connor: 'I can't remember not wanting to die.' Her memoir, She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, includes harrowing accounts of self-harm and her lifelong struggle with depression. She also described her current state: 'I've never known tiredness ever in my life. Weary. Will I ever get up again? I'm just dying, every day in pain.'
Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One at 8.45pm.
